No. 5/6 Skyhawks close out regular season against Roadrunners, No. 15/24 Orediggers

DURANGO, Colo. – The No. 5/6 Fort Lewis College men's basketball team is slated to finish its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season schedule at home this week, hosting Metropolitan State University of Denver and No. 15/24 Colorado School of Mines for a Friday/Saturday slate.

On Friday, Fort Lewis (24-2 Overall, 18-2 RMAC) will welcome MSU Denver (11-15, 8-12 RMAC) for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. Saturday's Top-25 rematch against 15th-ranked Mines is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Skyhawks will honor four seniors, JaQuaylon Mays, Dunnell Stafford, Brenden Boatwright, and Brendan La Rose, following the conclusion of the women's game and preceding the warmups Saturday night.

POSTSEASON SCENARIOS
The Skyhawks currently stand alone on top of the RMAC. A single win this week would guarantee at least a share of the conference title, while two wins would make Fort Lewis the outright conference winner.

Fort Lewis has already secured an opening-round home game which will be played next Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 6:00 p.m. inside Whalen Gymnasium. Should the Skyhawks win both games this week, they will earn the right to host the semifinal and finals of the RMAC Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 3-4. In a shared conference title scenario, the team considered to have swept the opposition will earn the right to host. The winner of the conference tournament is also granted an automatic bid to the NCAA South-Central Regional.

NINE-STRAIGHT WINS
The Skyhawks are soaring high riding a nine-game win streak. Last week, Fort Lewis overcame a daunting, three-game week to defeat then third and second-ranked Black Hills State University (24-3, 18-3 RMAC) in back-to-back contests 88-78 and 76-68 while also taking down South Dakota Mines (9-18, 8-13 RMAC) 80-69.

Akuel Kot and Mays led the Skyhawks across the week en route to sweeping the conference weekly honors. Tabbed as the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, Kot led FLC through the week scoring 69 total points and averaging 23.0 per game. Named the Defensive Player of the Week, Mays was vital in each of Fort Lewis' wins leading the way with 23 total rebounds, three assists, and three steals while also supplying 46 points.

SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS
MSU Denver enters this week hot off of a 75-73 overtime win over Colorado Christian University (9-18, 5-16 RMAC) and is now 2-5 over its last five games. The Roadrunners and Skyhawks met just four weeks ago in Denver, Colo., a matchup that ended 77-76 in favor of Fort Lewis.

Round one with the Roadrunners was an offensive shoot-out between each team's leading scorer. Kot, tied for the second-highest points per game average in the country at 24.4, paved the way for Fort Lewis with 27 points including the go-ahead basket with a pair of made free throws with just 0:01 on the clock. MSU Denver's Tyrei Randall, a six-foot-six senior guard averaging 15.5 points per game, led the Roadrunners with 30 points and nearly turned the tide in the final seconds with a last-chance trey that bounced off the rim as time expired.

SCOUTING THE No. 15/24 OREDIGGERS
Mines enters the weekend on a two-game winning streak and winning four of its last six games since Fort Lewis downed the Orediggers at home, 93-87. On Friday, however, Mines will head to Alamosa, Colo., for a matchup against the Adams State Grizzlies (5-21, 3-17 RMAC).

Back on Friday, Jan. 27, the Skyhawks marched into Lockridge Arena and downed then-No. 5/6 Mines 93-87 to notch the program's first win over a top-five opponent on the road. As a unit, Fort Lewis out-shot the Orediggers in the first go-around 53.8% to 50.7% from the field, and 93.8% to 50.0%from the free-throw line, but Mines held the advantage from beyond the arc 45.8% to 42.1%. Additionally, the Orediggers outrebounded the Skyhawks 37-31.

The Orediggers saw five players finish in double figures: Adam Krasovec (16), Adam Thistlewood (12), Riley Schroeder (12), Reagan Koch (11), and Brendan Sullivan (10). Kot led Fort Lewis with 34 points while Mays added 15, Obi Agbim 13, and Boatwright 11 more.

9R AND BEACH NIGHT
Friday's contest against MSU Denver is themed "9R Night" presented by Bank of Colorado, meaning all 9-R students will be granted free admission and any accompanying parents' ticket will only be $5. On Saturday, both games will be themed "Beach Night" to send the seniors out in style presented by Morehart Murphy Regional Auto Center. Fans are encouraged to wear their best, beach-themed shirts. Additionally, fans at Saturday's game are encouraged to join us in "Donating a Dollar to Fight Hunger" presented by Morehart Murphy. There will be a donation period during the game.
