Skyhawks drop 3-2 decision to Chaparrals in season opener

DURANGO, Colo. – Gabriel Legendre provided the equalizer early into the second half, and Loic Jean-Baptiste another goal in the 87th minute, but a pair of back-to-back goals by the Chaparrals proved too much as the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team was dealt its first set back of the season by Lubbock Christian University in a 3-2 contest Thursday night at Dirks Field.

Lubbock took the offensive advantage early, forcing the Skyhawks to play most of the opening minutes on its defending half. The Chaps totaled just six shots across the opening half, but it was a defensive breakdown in the fifth minute that put FLC behind.

After an offensive threat from Fort Lewis near the top of LCU's box, a deflected pass gave the Chaparrals the break needed to clear midfield and force into the Skyhawks' half. A pair of give-and-go passes put Lubbock just inside the Fort Lewis box, and an untimely deflection off of the left post gave Saimon Gjeci an open look for the first goal of the season.

The Skyhawks would go on to capture six corner kicks to the Chaparrals none in the first half, but ultimately could not equalize before halftime. Out of the locker room, however, Legendre had other plans. Fort Lewis quickly took control of the opening minutes, putting Legendre into the box in the 36th minute. Legendre drew a foul inside the box for the penalty kick and would convert for his 16th career goal.

FLC maintained offensive pressure and out-shot the Chaps 13-6 across the second half. Lubbock broke the stalemate in the 68th minute when Nako Amare took to his left at the top of the box and found the bottom right corner of the net for the advantage. Two minutes later, Pierlugi Paradiso would block a clearing pass from the Skyhawks' box and score a goal of his own for the 3-2 advantage.

Jean-Baptiste pulled Fort Lewis within one with a goal from the right side in the 87th minute, but the Skyhawks could not find another opportunity across the closing minutes. FLC out-shot LCU 19-12 across the match. Chaparrals goalkeeper Tom Miles made six saves against Fort Lewis' eight shots-on-goal.
