Skyhawks soar past Greyhounds 3-1 in bounce-back victory

DURANGO, Colo. – Emmett Layman put the Skyhawks on the board in the tenth minute and the combination of Anton Hjalmarsson and Gabriel Legendre slammed the door shut late in the second half to guide the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team to its first win of the season over Eastern New Mexico University Saturday night at a rowdy Dirks Field.

"It was great to get the first win at home and build some confidence heading into next weekend," Fort Lewis College Head Coach David Oberholtzer commented. "The guys played well: they were disciplined and patient. I would have liked us to put a few more goals away towards the end of the game when it opened up, but I thought we saw the game in front of us very well."

Layman, a true freshman from Clinton, Wash., took service from midfield and dribbled past three Eastern New Mexico defenders for an open shot. A Greyhound defender may have blocked his first shot, but Layman struck once more on the rebound and found the bottom left corner of the net for his first collegiate goal in just over 50 total minutes on the pitch.

Eastern New Mexico began to create offensive pressure and force Fort Lewis to defend in its own half, and after intercepting a clearance pass to the right side, junior Mathieu Beuvain fired a rocket from over 30 yards out that ricocheted on a crossing player and found its way to the back of the net.

A slow second half seemed to favor the Greyhounds as ENMU began to maintain possession and consistently force FLC on its heels. The Skyhawks began to back off following an offensive push, but Quinn Bosanko tested the Greyhounds' defender with a pass to the middle of the field and Hjalmarsson took full advantage beating his defender to the ball, the keeper to his right, and netting the open goal to recapture a 2-1 lead.

Momentum favored Fort Lewis, and the Skyhawks began to feel it making push after push and sacrificing a pair of open-goal opportunities to offside calls. Finally, in the 78th minute, David Citron found Legendre, who spun his defender to create space, just in time for a chip shot over the ENMU keeper and an insurance goal: Legendre's second goal in as many games.

All told, Fort Lewis out-shot Eastern New Mexico 15-7 across the night and six-to-three in shots on goal. The Skyhawks also dominated in service attempts taking eight corners to the Greyhounds one.
