Women’s soccer remains unbeaten in dominant win over West Texas A&M

DURANGO, Colo. – Senior Aubrey Swindle gave the Skyhawks their first, and junior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein added a brace in a commanding 2-0 win for the women's soccer team over the Lady Buffs on a rainy night under the lights of Dirks Field.

"I really felt like our team was good tonight. It starts with us dominating transitional moments and connecting the first pass after winning the ball back," said head coach Damian Clarke. "It will be really fun to see if we can be as collective on Saturday."

The win moves Fort Lewis to 3-0-2 on the year and is the second shutout of the 2023 season. With the loss, West Texas A&M fell to 1-1-2 overall.

Fort Lewis outshot West Texas A&M 24-4 on the match, including a 12-2 margin in shots on goal. The shots total is the most since the 2021 season when Fort Lewis matched that total in a draw against Colorado Christian. The Skyhawks dominated possession for the majority of play and picked up six corner kicks versus zero for the opposition.

Swindle's goal was assisted by freshman Amber Otts--her first of the season. Junior Sabrina Reyes led the team with three shots on goal, followed by three who sent a pair on frame. Senior Riley Bravin played the full 90 minutes in goal, making two saves and earning her third win of the season.

The Skyhawks dominated possession through the opening 10 minutes of the first half, tallying three shots on target compared to zero for West Texas A&M. Swindle had a hand in the majoring of the team's chances, first crossing a beautiful ball to Reyes in the box. Reyes attempted to chip the keeper, but a good move resulted in a save for the Lady Buffs. Swindle saw another opportunity 50 seconds later, taking on the keeper herself, but a slick playing surface resulted in a slightly too-hard touch and another save for the opposition.

West Texas A&M was credited with its first shot in the 27th minute when a foul set up a free kick near the corner. The deflection on the shot resulted in a low shot that missed wide right. The switch in momentum was short-lived, though, as Swindle finally found her breakthrough moment. The senior saw herself in a foot race between a pair of defenders and the charging goalkeeper. Using her always-impressive speed, she pummeled her shot off the keeper, and an advantageous bounce resulted in the game's first goal. The goal was Swindle's first of the season ninth of her Skyhawks career.

"Aubrey's goal was just a phenomenal effort, and her willingness to work is terrifying for back lines" recognized Clarke. "She is working her tail off for others and becoming a better player every week."

The remainder of the half was full of offensive prowess by the Skyhawks, including shots on goal by freshman Rylee Rustad and a pair from sophomore Rozlin Gomez, but the score remained 1-0 in favor of Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks outshot the Lady Buffs by a staggering 15-1 margin in the opening 45 minutes of play.

It didn't take long for Fort Lewis to double the lead in the second half, just 59 seconds to be exact, as a foul in the box set up a penalty kick. Meraz-Fishbein was called on the take the kick, and the junior came through with her second career goal to make it a 2-0 match. A trio of Skyhawks sent shots on frame over the next 20 minutes of play, but the Lady Buffs' keeper made plays to preserve the score. Fort Lewis used the final 15 minutes of play to get new looks with fresh legs on the pitch, and defense held strong to end the match in a 2-0 final.

"Gabi holds down the midfield very well, and Elizabeth and Riley connecting to her was the base to our performance tonight," said Clarke.
