Women's soccer earns third shutout of the season, tops Angelo State 1-0

DURANGO, Colo. – An early goal and all-out defensive effort led the Fort Lewis College women's soccer to its fourth win of the season and second straight shutout in a 1-0 blank of Angelo State University.

Fort Lewis improved to 4-0-2 overall while Angelo State dropped to 1-4-1 on the year.

Angelo State led the way with 14 total shots compared to 10 for Fort Lewis. Both teams registered five shots on goal. There were 24 total fouls for the match and zero cards were given out.

Senior Aubrey Swindle was the team's goal scorer for the second straight match. Freshman Haley Stafford earned an assist on the goal—her second of the season. Five Skyhawks played the full match, including freshmen Amber Otts and Ann Spence. Senior goalkeepers Katlyn Rosenbaum and Riley Bravin combined for the shutout, earning four saves along the way.

"That was a very gritty win. I thought that Angelo was good today, and we couldn't find any comfort in possession in the second half," said head coach Damian Clarke. "Aubrey's goal was wonderful, and she has grown into a constant threat--it's been fun to see her growth. This team is learning how to compete better and better every match."

The Belles registered the first shot of the morning, peppering Rosenbaum in the seventh minute, but the senior keeper corralled the attempt for her first save. The Skyhawks saw the next opportunity in the 12th minute when Stafford sent a ball forward to Swindle. Swindle beat her defender one one-on-one on a long run down the left side, touched it past the keeper, and finished into an open net from a tight angle to give her team the 1-0 lead.

Reyes tacked on another shot on frame, followed by two from Angelo State as the score remained 1-0 in favor of Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks earned another chance in the 33rd minute when a foul just outside the box set up Ann Spence on a free kick. She challenged the keeper with a shot on frame, but the opposing defender got a glove on it to push the attempt just high. The freshman had another chance in the 37th minute, beating a pair of defenders to create space to the left of the goal. Her shot would miss wide right as the score held at 1-0.

Sophomore Rozlin Gomez sent the half's final shot on goal in the 43rd minute, a low-center attempt that was saved by the opposing keeper. Fort Lewis held a 9-4 advantage in shots of the half, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Each team tallied six fouls.

Angelo State came out on a mission in the second half, holding possession for the majority of the first 10 minutes. Bravin was tested between the pipes twice in the span of 90 seconds, recording her first save on a shot near the edge of the box. She was busy moments later when she bodied a shot that was heading low-left. The deflecting found the foot of an Angelo State player who quickly shot the ball just high.

The Skyhawks' defenders continued to work to preserve the lead, taking away close calls as the Belles compiled six shots for the half. Angelo State's persistence continued as time ticked away, but the Fort Lewis defense held strong to keep the opposition off the scoreboard with time remaining sitting at seven minutes. The final minutes proved to be high-intensity soccer with Angelo State pressing to even the match and Fort Lewis sacrificing their bodies to hold the advantage. The Belles sent a variety of shots toward goal, but none found their way on goal as the Skyhawks ran the clock out on a home win.
