Hjalmarsson nets game winner as Skyhawks down Roadrunners in non-conference finale

DENVER Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak to the Metropolitan State University of Denver on the road Saturday afternoon as Gabriel Legendre equalized and Anton Hjalmarsson netted the game-winner to down the Roadrunners 2-1 at the Assembly Athletic Complex.

The Skyhawks close out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 4-2-1 overall record while the Roadrunners fall to 2-4-2.

"Today was certainly not our best performance, but we found a way to win," head coach David Oberholtzer said. "I was very happy that when we conceded a goal, the guys were able to respond very quickly. While we didn't play our best soccer, I thought it was a great sign that the group was able to dig in and find a way to get it done."

On paper, MSU Denver was in control of the pace throughout the contest. The Roadrunners out-shot Fort Lewis 16-8 across the afternoon and targeted nine on goal to FLC's three. Both sides took an even five corner kicks while Fort Lewis committed 11 fouls, eight in the second half, to MSU Denver's five: all of which came in the first half.

Aidan Bates and the Roadrunners took a one-nil lead early in the 16th minute when Bates beat his defender to the six-yard line and struck a header just past Lucas Martin in goal. Logan Hitzeman provided a set piece from just shy of 30 yards out for the assist.

It took all of 40 seconds for the Skyhawks to equalize and answer for its defensive mistake. On the following kick-off, Fort Lewis played the ball into its defensive half before making a steady push down the right side of the field. Thomas Kirkham drove into the penalty box, evaded a trio of MSUD defenders, and clipped the ball forward with his right foot to the open Legendre who froze the Roadrunners keeper with a strike to his right.

Out of the intermission, it was Kirkham once more who took the ball near the MSU Denver box with ease. Kirkham found a driving Legendre to his right, who clipped it just further for a wide-open Hjalmarsson who struck mid-stride and secured what would be the game-winning goal.

Martin was lights out for the remainder of the match, recording eight total saves against the constant flow of MSUD attacks while spoiling a series of Roadrunners set pieces across the final minutes.
