Hjalmarsson strikes twice as Skyhawks top Grizzlies 4-1 in conference opener

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Winning its third-straight game on the back of four goals, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team defeated Adams State University 3-1 in both program's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener Wednesday afternoon at the ASU Lacrosse & Soccer field.

The Skyhawks have now won ten straight matches against the Grizzlies, the most in series history, and advance to 5-2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Adams State falls to 0-7 overall and 0-1 in RMAC play.

"Four points on the road is a great way to open up conference play," head coach David Oberholtzer shared. "It can be a challenge mentally to play any team twice in one week. I thought we created enough chances earlier on to make the game more comfortable but we just didn't take them. Over time we were able to wear them down and create some separation with some very composed finishes."

Adams State got on the board first in the 33rd minute. After taking service into the left side of the box from Emmanuel Kolleh, Ranulfo Lopez struck toward goal, and an untimely deflection off the heel of a Skyhawks defender chipped the ball straight up and just into the goal.

Fort Lewis responded promptly, and Tomas Duenes caught the Grizzlies goalkeeper off guard with the same move Adams State used to score last week in Durango: a strike just inside the right post on a free kick from the top of the box.

In the 60th minute, Jeremiah Davis played the ball off of his defender near the end line to earn a corner kick for the blue and gold. Duenes put the set piece into the front side of the box and an un-checked Gabriel Legendre placed an un-touched header through three defenders into the back of the net for the game-winner.

They say lightning strikes twice, and so does Anton Hjalmarsson. Hjalmarsson beat the keeper one-on-one, thanks to Thomas Kirkham drawing a pair of defenders and providing the service pass, in the 80th minute for a right-footed strike in the back corner. Again, in the 87th minute, Aymaro Vargas was able to draw out his defenders and find Hjalmarsson in the same spot for his second goal of the match.

All told, Fort Lewis rolled offensively with 20 total shots and 10 shots on goal against Adams State's five total and two on goal. The Grizzlies committed 17 fouls to the Skyhawks five.
