Burnside places first, cross-country races at Gig Leadbetter Maverick Stampede

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Senior Peyton Burnside was the top finished in the women's 5k at the Gig Leadbetter Maverick Stampede on Friday, running for a personal best with a time of 19:36.2.

In the men's 8k, it was freshman Malakai Hanson who led the charge for Fort Lewis with a personal best time of 25:12.3 to place seventh. As a team, the Skyhawks placed second with 33 points. Western Colorado took the top spot and Colorado Mesa finished third. The Skyhawks women took home the team title with 15 points, coming in ahead of Colorado Mesa (49 points).

Junior Aaron Busche was the next finisher with a time of 25:56.2, followed by sophomore Skyler McIntyre who clocked a time of 25:57.8—both times were personal bests. Senior Braedon Sittman and freshman TJ Frueh followed in 16th and 17th place, respectively, with personal best times of 26:03.3 and 26:08.6.

Additional Finishers for the Skyhawks

Led by Burnside's first-place finish, the women's team took home the top five spots in the 5k race. Freshman Tessa Stadler earned a second-place finish with a time of 19:44.6, followed by freshman Skylar Charlie who finished in 19:45.2 to place third. Freshman Clare Castleberry and junior Celine Nez followed in fourth and fifth place with times of 20:01.9 and 20:04.4, respectively.

Fort Lewis will make the trek to Chicago for the Lewis Crossover Invite, hosted by Lewis University on Saturday, October 7. Last year, the Invite saw teams from 22 both men's and women's programs from across the country—many of which were nationally ranked.
