Women's soccer secures 2-1 win in nonconference tilt

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The duo of sophomore Josie Coulter and freshman Abila Tapia scored their first career goals on Monday, guiding the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Adams State University in a nonconference tilt.

Fort Lewis improved to 1-0-1 on the year while Adams State fell to 0-1-1 overall. The victory was the program's first on the road since the 2021 season.

The Skyhawks outshot the Grizzlies 8-2, including a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. The teams totaled eight fouls for the match. Coulter and Tapia were responsible for the afternoon's goals while freshmen Jenna Salazar and Haley Stafford notched their first career assists in the effort. Senior goalkeeper Riley Bravin played the full 90 minutes for the second time in her career and picked up her third win as a Skyhawk. Freshman Amber Otts was the only other Fort Lewis player to go the distance, playing 90 minutes for the second-straight game.

Fort Lewis had the first quality look of the contest, hitting the post for the second straight game on a shot by freshman Ashlyn Salas. The opposing keeper made a clean save on the ricochet to keep things even in the fifth minute. The Skyhawks tallied another shot in the 14th minute, this one sailing high off the foot of Stafford. Possession continued to be dominated by the Skyhawks, and freshman Ann Spence got in on the attack with a sliding shot at the top of the box which was collected by the keeper.

The constant pressure eventually paid off when a free kick from senior Elizabeth David led to the game's first goal. David sent the ball over the heads of the awaiting players, first finding the head of a Fort Lewis player who settled the ball at the feet of Coulter who buried her first career goal in the 31st minute. The 1-0 score stood at the end of the first half with Fort Lewis outshooting Adams State 5-0.

The Skyhawks wasted little time doubling up the lead out of the halftime break, needing just four minutes to go ahead 2-0 on the Grizzlies. The scoring play got started with a great through ball from midfield which found the feet of Stafford in the far corner. The freshman crossed a shot toward the keeper who had a challenging time corralling the ball. The slight misplay was costly as a crashing Tapia booted the deflection to the back of the net for her first career goal.

The Grizzlies got one back in the 69th minute when a foul was called against a Skyhawk in the box. Adams State's Karlee Caballero was called on to take the penalty kick and snuck her shot to the right of Bravin to make it 2-1. The final portion of the game was relatively quiet with just a shot on goal from sophomore Rachel Peebles closing out the contest. The teams subbed players in and out through the last five minutes of play, and the game closed out with a 2-1 score.

Comments from Coach Clarke
"I'm really proud of this group after getting out of a tough environment with two results. We beat a very well-coached team who forced a lot of tactical adjustments from us. I think the team grew this weekend, and it's fun to be a part of this. No doubt we have a lot to learn before next weekend, but I think we are off to a good start."
