Skyhawks down Mustangs in non-conference bout

GUNNISON, Colo. – High altitude is where the Skyhawks soar, and it has never been clearer than today as the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team took full advantage of Western Colorado University's geographical location to handle the Midwestern State University Mustangs 3-0 in a non-conference matchup and remain unbeaten at a balmy Katy O. Rady Field.

Fort Lewis improves to 2-0-1 on the season whereas Midwestern State falls to 0-1-2. The Skyhawks have now defeated the Mustangs in back-to-back matches.

"It's always nice to beat a team away from home, and especially one with so much history," head coach Damian Clarke commented. "Hayley, Hope, and I all coached at MSU together so there was a bit of emotion throughout today's match."

Offensively, the Skyhawks and Mustangs exchanged blows throughout the first half. Midwestern State may have out-shot FLC 12-11, however, it was Anika Scherer who finally beat the Mustangs' goalkeeper in the 31st minute for the 1-0 advantage. Elizabeth David was credited for the assist: her first of the season and fifth overall in a Skyhawks uniform.

Out of the half, Fort Lewis continued to dominate possession and control the pace of the game while holding Midwestern State at bay. The Skyhawks split goalkeeping duties between Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum who combined for five saves and the shutout; the first of Bravin's career and the third for Rosenbaum.

Freshman Rylee Rustad took to providing an insurance goal for FLC when Aubrey Swindle split three defenders into the box and serviced the ball to a wide-open Rustad for the score. Just under four minutes later, Sabrina Reyes slammed the door shut on MSU, nabbing a deflection off a Mustangs' defender near midfield then driving 35 yards past a pair of defenders to put a rocket off of her right foot in the back left corner of the net.

"Our team displayed great toughness today against a quality Midwestern State team," Clarke added. "The patience to get the second and third goals showed a bit of maturity out of us. We have plenty to be happy about, but a lot of work to do before Chaminade on Sunday."

All told, Fort Lewis led in total shots 19-17 and shots on goal 10-5 while not taking a single corner kick to Midwestern State's three.
