Women's soccer heads to Gunnison for a pair of neutral site matches

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team continues its season this week with a pair of neutral site games on the campus of Western Colorado University. On Friday, the Skyhawks will face Midwestern State University, followed by a Sunday match against Chaminade University.

Looking Back
Fort Lewis came away from opening weekend with a 1-0-1 record, tying with Eastern New Mexico (1-1) before earning the win against Adams State University (2-1). In the game against ENMU, freshman Amber Otts netted her first career goal with the assist coming from senior Aubrey Swindle. Fort Lewis outshot Eastern New Mexico 12-6, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The Skyhawks also edged out the opposition with an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. The teams combined for 12 fouls on the afternoon. Senior Elizabeth David and sophomore Rachel Peebles settled in on defense and played 90 minutes. Senior goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum split time, with Bravin collecting a pair of saves in the effort.

The win over Adams State saw first career goals from sophomore Josie Coulter and freshman Abila Tapia. The Skyhawks outshot the Grizzlies 8-2, including a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. The teams totaled eight fouls for the match. Freshmen Jenna Salazar and Haley Stafford notched their first career assists in the effort. Senior goalkeeper Riley Bravin played the full 90 minutes for the second time in her career and picked up her third win as a Skyhawk.

Scouting Midwestern State University
Midwestern State sits at 0-0-2 this season after a 0-0 match against MSU Denver and a 1-1 tie with Central Oklahoma. Lexi Beck is responsible for the team's goal while Isabella Cruz leads all players with 10 shots. Four players have played full matches so far in 2023, including goalkeeper Lexi Jackson who has faced 14 shots on the year.

The Mustangs were 9-9-2 last season, including a 5-6-1 record in conference play. The team advanced all the way to the Lone Star Conference Championship game but ultimately fell by a 4-1 score to No. 1 Dallas Baptist University. Fort Lewis is 5-4-3 all-time against Midwestern State and won the most recent meeting by a 3-1 final.

Scouting Chaminade University
Chaminade is 0-0-1 to start the season, going scoreless against Northwest Nazarene University last week. The team tallied three shots in the season opener, one of which made its way on target. Tehani Smith, Naomi Takata, and Kaila Levoit each played the full 90 minutes. Takata was in goal and faced four shots on the day.

The Silverswords were 7-6-3 overall last season with a 4-3-3 record in conference play. The Skyhawks have faced Chaminade just once, a 1-0 loss at home in the season-opener last season.

Fort Lewis will make its home debut on Thursday, September 14th at 7:00 p.m. when they take on Western Colorado University. The team will follow it up on Saturday against Angelo State University from Dirks Field.
