Women's soccer falls to No. 1 Orediggers

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's soccer returned to its home pitch on Friday, facing the nation's number one ranked team in Colorado School of Mines, and ultimately fell in a 5-1 decision.

The loss dropped Fort Lewis to 6-2-1 on the year and 3-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. No. 1 Mines improved to 10-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the league.

The Orediggers narrowly outshot the Skyhawks 15-13 for the match, including a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. Mines had an advantage in corner kicks at 6-1. The teams combined for 10 saves and 11 fouls.
Fifth-year defender Elizabeth David was responsible for Fort Lewis' lone goal after banking a free kick from 35 yards. Five additional players recorded shots on goal for the Skyhawks. Senior Sabrina Reyes was the lone Skyhawk to play the full 90 minutes. Fifth-year goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum split time with Rosenbaum earning three saves. Mines was led by Reese McDermott who netted two goals while Cloey Seltzer dished out two assists.

The Skyhawks were the first to apply pressure offensively with what looked like the match's first goal finding space after just 51 seconds of play. The goal was waved due to an offside call and play resumed. Sophomore Abila Tabia and Reyes followed with shots on goal, but two saves by the Mines keeper preserved the tie. The Orediggers broke through in the 12th minute when an unlucky deflection off the post found Gaby Guerrero. Guerrero took aim from four yards out and made it a 1-0 game.

Mines doubled the lead minutes later when Seltzer took the ball to the corner, beat her defender right, and sent a cross into the box. McDermott was well-positioned and sent a shot in low left to make it 2-0. The Skyhawks earned a break in the 40th minute when a foul called against the Orediggers allowed Elizabeth David to line up just inside midfield. The fifth-year sent a booming shot into traffic and earned a favorable bounce over the keeper's reach for her first goal of the season.

Bravin made a save in the 42nd minute, and junior Abigail Nkrumah forced the opposing keeper to make a dynamic save 30 seconds later to hold to score. Mines found the back of the net once more in the half after a blocked shot resulted in a quick pass to the right side. Kaitlyn Manalili found space to the right of two defenders and sent a sharp shot high-left to make it 3-1 heading into the break.
The second half began much like the first half ended as Mines netted its fourth goal of the match just 90 seconds into play. Seltzer was the play developer again, bring the ball to the far corner and sending a cross into the box. Her intended target, McDermott, executed a perfect header that trickled in low-right for a 4-1 score.

The following 25 minutes of play featured defensive effort and some physicality with the majority of the match's fouls coming in that span. Rosenbaum had an incredible stretch from the 70th to 74th minutes where she racked up three saves on shots that seemed destined to find the back of the net. The Fort Lewis defense had a lapse in the 82nd minute, and it was enough for the Orediggers to extend the lead. A throw in made its way to Elise Putnam who found room and scored from 22 yards out. Junior Anna Tucker recorded the final shot on goal of the match as time expired on a 5-1 final.

Fort Lewis (6-2-1, 3-1 RMAC) will be back on Dirks Field on Sunday for a noon kickoff against UCCS. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of the team's annual Pink Game.
