Women's soccer downed by Mountain Lions, 1-0

DURANGO, Colo. – A UCCS goal scored late in the first half stood as the game-winner in a narrow 1-0 loss for the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team on Sunday.

Fort Lewis fell to 6-3-1 on the year and 3-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while UCCS improved to 3-6-2 overall and 1-4 in the league.

The Skyhawks held a slight lead in shots at 12-11, but the Mountain Lions held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Fort Lewis was called for nine fouls and picked up one yellow card while UCCS committed six fouls and received two yellows.

Juniors Josie Coulter and Abigail Nkrumah both had three shots, and all three of Nkrumah's were on goal. Elizabeth David, Anna Tucker, and Ashlyn Salas had the team's additional three shots on goal. Sophomore Ann Spence led the team in minutes played with 79. The Fort Lewis keepers, Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum, combined for six saves. The Mountain Lions earned their goal off the foot of Luka Johnson, assisted by Elise Broberg.

The teams were offensive early in the match with Elizabeth David sending a shot on goal in the 8th minute, followed by a pair of shots on target by UCCS in the 14th and 16th minutes. Rosenbaum made her third save of the sequence, this one in the 25th. Nkrumah came on and recorded her first shot in the 39th minute which was saved by Alexa Malaspina in goal.  The Mountain Lions broke through 13 seconds later when a cross from Broberg found Johnson. Johnson faked left and shook her defenders before firing a sprawling shot low-right for a 1-0 lead. Despite holding an 8-4 advantage in shots, the Skyhawks trailed heading into halftime.

The second half opened with Bravin making a save on a shot from outside of the box. UCCS had another good look after a yellow card allowed for favorable field position. The ensuing shot rattled off the woodwork to hold the score. The visitors continued to send shots on goal and just off target with the score holding. Nkrumah had a promising look in the 85th minute, but her quick shot was tampered by the opposing keeper to keep Fort Lewis off the board. The junior had the team's last chance, this one coming in the 89th minute, but it resulted in another save as time expired on a one-goal loss.

Fort Lewis (6-3-1, 3-2 RMAC) is back on the road next week to face (RV) Colorado Mesa University (5-1-2, 3-0 RMAC) and Westminster University (4-1-2, 2-0-1 RMAC). Friday's match in Grand Junction begins and 7:00 p.m. while Sunday's matinee in Salt Lake City will kick off at noon.
