Women's soccer drops road opener to #22 Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Skyhawks tied the match in the 50th minute, but the No. 22 Mavericks responded with two unanswered goals to take a 3-1 win in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's soccer action on Friday night.

Fort Lewis fell to 6-4-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play while Colorado Mesa improved to 8-1-2 on the year and 6-0 in the league.

"It was a high-level game tonight. We lost to a very good team but gave them a lot to think about," said head coach Damian Clarke. "There is much to be excited about in our team grown through some definite heartache. We are on to the next"

Colorado Mesa outshot Fort Lewis 13-9, including a 7-3 lead in shots on goal. The Skyhawks had four corner kicks versus three for the Mavericks. Junior Abigail Nkrumah scored her third goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Abila Tapia. Fifth-year goalkeeper Riley Bravin played 45 minutes and made three saves.

After playing back and forth in the opening minutes, Colorado Mesa fired the match's first shot but watched it sail high in the ninth minute. The Mavericks had their first shot on goal in the 11th minute when a cross found Kylie Wells six yards out from Bravin in the net. The fifth-year keeper immediately saved a quick shot off the right foot to hold the match scoreless. Colorado Mesa had another look after battling for possession for the Fort Lewis attacking third, eventually sending a shot on goal to be added to Bravin's saves count.

The Mavericks broke through in the 25th minute when a pass from midfield found Sauvelyne Randel ahead of a pair of defenders. The veteran forward fired a shot, and Bravin got a hand on it, but the deflection found the top right corner for a 1-0 score. Bravin made another save in the 33rd minute to hold the match at a one-goal difference, and Fort Lewis continued to apply pressure to the opposing defense. Despite possessing the ball in their half of the field for much of the opening 45 minutes, Fort Lewis only picked up two shots. First, Anna Tucker sent one wide in the 42nd minute, followed by another off target attempt by Haley Stafford with 23 seconds remaining.

The second half was a different story for the Skyhawks with offensive pressure dominating the opening minute. Nkrumah had her first opportunity in the 50th minute after a beautiful cross from Stafford resulted in a shot off the post. The junior had another chance three minutes later, this time on a set piece in the near corner. Tapia lined up and sent a sharp shot into the box, and Nkrumah played the bounce. Despite the ball traveling behind Nkrumah's body, she somehow contorted and sent a strong strike into the bottom right corner for a 1-1 score.

Colorado Mesa scored the go-ahead goal four minutes later after an initial save bounced to the feet of Abby Fotheringham to make it 2-1. The play developed with Randel took advantage of a failed clear for a shot from outside the box. Rosenbaum made an elite save on the high shot, but her swat found Fotheringham who sent a one-touch goal just under the crossbar. The Mavericks added their third goal of the match on a precise, curling blast from the left of goal that hit the post and snuck in to make it 3-1. Gabi Meraz-Fishbein had a pair of off-target shots as the match ended in a 3-1 final.

Fort Lewis (6-4-1, 3-3 RMAC) will face Westminster University (4-2-3, 2-1-2 RMAC) on Sunday at noon in Salt Lake City.  The Griffins are coming off a decisive 3-0 win over Western Colorado University.
