Meraz-Fishbein scores second goal of season, Skyhawks tie Griffins

SALT LAKE CITY – Two penalty kicks, one for each team, were the difference in a hard-fought 1-1 tie between Fort Lewis College and Westminster University in women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon.

With the tie, the Skyhawks move to 6-4-2 overall and 3-3-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Griffins are now 5-2-4 on the year and 3-1-3 in the league.

"That was an important result for us to earn today," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We needed that to help us get over a spell of tough results. The team proved its grit today and did it man-down for 15 minutes. We are leaving with our heads up and ready for what's next."

Fort Lewis had a 13-10 edge in shots, but Westminster had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The teams played a physical style of soccer and accumulated 27 fouls, three yellow cards, and a red card.

Senior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein was responsible for the Skyhawks' penalty kick goal and led the team with five shots while playing 90 minutes. Juniors Anna Tucker and Abigail Nkrumah had three shots apiece. Defenders Elizabeth David and Rachel Peebles joined Meraz-Fishbein in playing the full 90 minutes. Goalkeepers Katlyn Rosenbaum and Riley Bravin combined for four saves.

The Griffins marked the first shot of the match in the ninth minute with an attempt that traveled high right. The Skyhawks had the next chance when a free kick ultimately found the foot of Meraz-Fishbein for a low ball that missed left. Westminster recorded its first shot on goal in the 17th minute which resulted in a routine save for Rosenbaum in goal. Meraz-Fishbein added two more shots to her total, one after settling an attempted clear for a strike that sailed high.

Tucker tested the keeper three minutes later when a bouncing shot on goal found its way to the arms of Brooklyn Northcutt. Fort Lewis had its best look in the 31st minute when Nkrumah intercepted an attempted clear. The junior brought the ball into the box with her head, splitting the defenders and firing a bullet of a shot into the chest of the Westminster keeper. The Griffins had a near miss in the 38th minute with a shot off the foot of Kim Hendrickson nailed the crossbar from 20 yards out. Tucker had the final look of the opening half with a strike from outside the box that cleared the goal high by two feet. The Skyhawks had a 7-4 edge in shots and a 3-2 lead in shots on goal through the first half.

Fort Lewis broke through in the 54th minute with its first penalty kick opportunity of the season. The chance presented itself when Elizabeth Davis lined up for a free kick just outside of midfield. The defender directed the ball into traffic in the box, and a deflection caught the hand of a Westminster player to give Meraz-Fishbein a PK chance. The senior did what she did best and scored her third career penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.

The Skyhawks' defense limited the Griffins to one shot that missed wide to carry the lead into the final 20 minutes of the match. Westminster earned an opening in the 74th minute when a small window between two defenders allowed for a shot on goal. The ball dribbled into Bravin's space and resulted in a routine save. In a twist of fate, Westminster was given a penalty kick which resulted in a goal in the 79th minute to make it 1-1. Josie Coulter and Meraz-Fishbein combined for a sequence with two shots in the 85th minute, one getting blocked and the next missing high to keep the match in a deadlock. The final four minutes saw three fouls and a yellow card as time expired on a tie from Dumke Field.

Fort Lewis (6-4-2, 3-3-1 RMAC) returns home for Homecoming next week, playing on Friday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m. against Black Hills State and on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. versus Regis University.
