Orediggers down No. 13 Skyhawks in Golden

Fort Lewis suffers first shutout of 2024

GOLDEN, Colo. – Unable to string together offensive possessions despite controlling the pace for nearly 60 percent of the match, the No. 13-ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team (7-2-5, 3-2-1 RMAC) ultimately fell 3-0 and suffered its first shutout of the season at the hands of Colorado School of Mines (4-9-2, 3-2-2 RMAC) in a Thursday night Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest up at Stermole Soccer Stadium.

"Really disappointed in our performance tonight," David Oberholtzer commented. "I thought we got outworked; we typically pride ourselves on outworking our opponent and taking care of the little things, so it's disappointing that we didn't have that part of us tonight. But, excited to be able to get back out on the field on Sunday."

The Skyhawks held possession for over 52 minutes of the match and fired off 17 shots against the Orediggers 16, but could only place four shots between the posts while Mines rifled off nine shots on goal for three scores. In addition, Colorado School of Mines also held the edge in corner kicks 8-to-6 while committing eight fouls against Fort Lewis' 18.

Mines drew first blood early, with senior John Burnett notching his first goal of 2024 just shy of 10 minutes into the match as he found enough space inside the penalty box to strike on a corner kick coupled with a favorable bounce and finished with an excellent volley to the back-left corner of the net.

The Orediggers continued to pressure the Skyhawks into its half before breaking through once more in the 26th minute. The reigning Week Seven RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, Ayman Bushara, chased down a long ball near the far side before driving into the box and sending a strike from the six-yard box low-right inside of the post for the 2-0 advantage.

Fort Lewis found life and offensive pressure out of the half as the Skyhawks fired off 11 total shots and all six corner kicks across the final 45 minutes. Colorado School of Mines had other plans, however, as the Orediggers struck for a third time only 1:21 seconds into the half. Gabe Rodriguez sent the ball into space at the top-left corner of the 18-yard box, and Raul Gerhardus fired off an arching shot that bent just under the crossbar for the final goal of the evening.

Gerhargus and Josh Ary each earned assists on the first two goals scored, respectively. Peter Saunders made four saves in goal en route to his second clean sheet in as many matches. Aidan Hartman made six saves for the Skyhawks.
