No. 13 Skyhawks top Roadrunners in offensive shootout

Aguilera matches career-high with two goals

DENVER, Colo. – Gabriel Legendre and David Citron each found the back of the net before Fabrizio Aguilera fired in the final two goals of the afternoon to lead the No. 13-ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team (8-2-5, 4-2-1 RMAC) past MSU Denver (6-7-3, 3-3-2 RMAC) 4-3 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match at The Assembly Athletic Complex to claim a critical three points for the Skyhawks.

"Our guys know there will be days like today when it's not always pretty, but I have to credit them for working super hard and finding a way to grind out three big points on the road," David Oberholzter shared. "A great day for Fabrizio Aguilera as well. He has a ton of ability and strikes the ball really well, and he came through when we needed to really get on the board."

The Skyhawks buckled down in another offensive dual on the road firing off 12 shots while the Roadrunners led the contest with 17. Fort Lewis managed to place five shots on goal, scoring on four of them, leaving MSUD goalkeeper Nick McNeil with one save on the afternoon. Similarly, MSU Denver took four shots on goal, scoring in three, giving Aidan Hartman one save between the posts.

MSU Denver struck early in the fourth minute as Nicco Schiappa took service from Luke Bone on a corner kick and placed a header in the back-right corner of the net. Gabriel Legendre, in the 16th minute, found the equalizer on a right-foot chipper from the penalty line as the fifth-year senior took service from a driving David Citron on the right side of the penalty box.

Charlie Matsumoto and the Roadrunners had other plans, however, as the sophomore broke through the back line and drove into the box before firing a shot from nearly eight yards to recapture the 2-1 lead just 1:11 seconds later. Once more, Fort Lewis responded promptly with Tomas Duenes making a lunging one-touch pass to Citron who found enough space near the 18-yard line to sneak a left-footed strike through a trio of Roadrunners and inside the right post.

Fort Lewis would go on to carry a 3-2 lead into the locker room after Fabrizio Aguilera came onto the pitch and in an identical fashion to Citron, found empty space at the top of the box and rifled a left-footed shot into the top-left corner of the frame.

Out of the half, MSU Denver's Dallas Baer found the equalizer in the 59th minute. The junior from Jacksonville, Florida, took service from Bone-who earned his second assist of the afternoon-and found the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

In the 83rd minute, it was Aguilera who stepped up in crunch time and delivered the game-winning goal to secure a crucial three points. Citron drove down the far side to draw out a trio of defenders before sending the ball inside the box to Aguilera, who took two pump-fakes, put a defender on the turf, and found the back of the net on his third swing for his second-career two-goal performance.
