Women's soccer wins fourth straight thanks to second-half surge

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – A second-half surge by the Skyhawks offensive, combined with a shutout from Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum, led the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over New Mexico Highlands University on Friday afternoon.

Win shutout was Fort Lewis' second of the season and lifted the team to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. NMHU dropped to 2-6-1 overall and 0-3 in league play.

The Skyhawks outshot the Cowgirls 10-9 and the teams were even with seven shots on goal apiece. Junior Abigail Nkrumah got the scoring started with her second goal of the season and assisted on sophomore Abila Tapia's fourth of the year. Senior Anika Scherer scored her first goal of the season to make it 3-0. Fifth-year goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for seven saves and the shutout. Fifth year Elizabeth David and junior Renee Junna each played the full 90 minutes.

The Cowgirls were credited with the first shot of the match which was saved by Bravin in the fifth minute. The home team continued its pressure and racked up three more shots on target through the opening 16 minutes of action. Sophomore Ashlyn Salas had Fort Lewis' first shot of the afternoon in the 19th minute, and the attempt was saved low right by the opposing keeper.

The Skyhawks saw shots miss just off target through the middle portion of the half to preserve the scoreless tie. Sophomore Ann Spence had the team's final shot on goal of the half in the 41st minute which resulted in another save for the Cowgirl's keeper. Fort Lewis was outshot in the half, including a five to two advantage for NMHU in shots on goal. Bravin earned five saves through 45 minutes of play.

The Cowgirls came out of the halftime break with a pair of shots on goal that were smothered by Rosenbaum. Fort Lewis finally broke through with its first goal in the 61st minute when Nkrumah found herself one-on-one with a defender as they sprinted into the box. Nkrumah stayed on her feet despite some tangling of limbs and placed her shot low left for a 1-0 lead.

The scoring continued nine minutes later thanks to Tapia's fourth goal of the season. Nkrumah was involved in the second goal when she sent a cross to the feet of Tapia. Unbelievably, Tapia found a sliver of space inside the far-right post and scored a sprawling goal to make it 2-0. The third and final goal of the match came off a corner from Stafford. The sophomore sent a well-placed ball into traffic, and Scherer nudged it ahead for a 3-0 lead.

Fort Lewis (5-1-1, 2-0 RMAC) will conclude its road trip on Sunday in Alamosa when they take on Adams State University (2-4-1, 0-2 RMAC) at 1:00 p.m. from the ASU Soccer Field.
