Skyhawks extend winning streak to five matches, Coulter enjoys career day

ALAMOSA, Colo. – In her first start and second match back after sustaining an injury in mid-September, junior Josie Coulter enjoyed a career day with two goals and an assist to guide her Skyhawks women's soccer team to its fifth straight win, 3-0, in a conference matchup against Adams State University.

In addition to Coulter's highlight performance, junior defender Rachel Peebles scored the first goal of her career—the first of the day and the eventual game-winner.

The win lifted Fort Lewis to 6-1-1 on the year and 3-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Skyhawks are in a two-way tie for second in the conference with nine points, coming in just behind MSU Denver who has 12 points thanks to having played one more conference game than Fort Lewis and Colorado Mesa. Adams State dropped to 2-6-1 overall and 0-4 in the league.

As a team, the Skyhawks held a 16-13 advantage in shots, but the Grizzlies had a 6-5 lead in shots on goal. The teams played a clean match and totaled just five fouls. Coulter and Peebles were responsible for the three goals scored, and sophomore defender Amber Otts earned her second assist of the season. Fifth-year Elizabeth David, junior Renee Junna, and sophomore Ann Spence played the full 90 minutes. Fifth-year goalkeepers Katlyn Rosenbaum and Riley Bravin combined for six saves in their second-straight shutout.

"We looked pretty good and competent from front to back. Renee (Junna) and Elizabeth (David) were excellent in possession and controlled the tempo well," acknowledged head coach Damian Clarke. "Our shape and pressure were good, and this was probably the best 90 minutes of soccer for the team up until this point."

Fort Lewis tallied a pair of shots in the first three minutes of play, including a shot on goal by senior Danielle Gonzales, in the third minute. Adams State saw its first shot miss wide in the 14th minute, and the teams went on to feel each other out and find their rhythm. Peebles broke the scoreless spell in the 21st minute off the service from Coulter. Coulter found the ball just inside the 18-yard box and quickly played it to a charging Peebles on the left side of the goal. The junior had three defenders on her, but she beat them by a step and sent a sharp cross tucked just inside the right post for a 1-0 lead. Adams State tested Rosenbaum in goal on its following possession with a shot from nearly 30 yards out, but the attempt was easily thwarted by the veteran keeper.

Rosenbaum went on to make two more saves throughout the half to keep a clean sheet. The Skyhawks saw promising looks from multiple players in the final 10 minutes of the half, including a shot by junior Anna Tucker that rattled off the crossbar in the 41st minute. Junior Abigail Nkrumah had the last look for the team with 25 seconds remaining after she settled a ball that rattled off several legs just outside the box. Her attempt was corralled off the bounce to hold the lead at 1-0 heading into the break.

Coulter wasted no time doubling the lead with her first goal of the afternoon finding the back of the net just 90 seconds into the second half. Coulter got the play developed with a pass near midfield that worked its way to her teammate in the box. Two good touches fed the ball back to Coulter who collected and had plenty of time to select her spot in the top left corner to give her team a 2-0 lead. The Grizzlies followed with a pair of shots on goal in the 51st and 54th minutes, both of which were saved by Bravin dead-center in the net.

The 61st minute saw the Skyhawks' third goal of the match and the second of Coulter's outing off an assist by Otts. Otts collected a pass on the far right sideline and worked her way back toward the center of the field, nearly 25 yards from goal. The sophomore fed the ball up and ahead to Coulter who dodged a sliding Adams State player and went against the grain with a right-footed shot to extend the lead to 3-0. Fort Lewis had one more look late in the match when a free kick just outside the box resulted in a shot that carried just high. The Grizzlies had one more shot late in the half, but the horn would eventually sound on a resounding 3-0 win for the Skyhawks.

Fort Lewis (6-1-1, 3-0 RMAC) is back home next week with a Friday/Sunday split. Friday's match will feature a 4:30 p.m. kickoff against (current) No. 1 Colorado School of Mines for the annual Nike N7 celebration where we honor our Native American student-athletes. On Sunday, the team will welcome UCCS for a noon start to the annual pink game, sponsored by CommonSpirit.
