Skyhawks lose in three sets to Grizzlies

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Facing Adams State University for the third time this season, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team dropped a three-set match to begin its Power Pod week at the Gallogly Events Center.

Fort Lewis fell to 9-13 overall and remains 5-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play since the Power Pod matches do not count toward league records. Adams State improved to 9-15 and is 4-7 in the league.

The Skyhawks were limited to hitting just .105 for the match versus a .233 efficiency for the Grizzlies. The teams were even with 11 blocks apiece while Adams State held a 56-48 edge in digs.

Sophomore Alina Nunez led the team with 13 kills and 16 digs, followed by fifth-year Lauren Shea who put away 12 kills. Redshirt freshman Averie Dembickie led the way with six blocks while Shea had five. Freshman Emery Pomroy recorded 11 digs, and senior Natalia Lambos dished out 32 assists.

The first set saw a Fort Lewis lead through the early goings after a pair of Nunez kills made it 8-5. Then, the Skyhawks went on a 6-2 scoring run that saw two blocks from Dembickie for a 14-9 score. Adams State responded with a 10-0 scoring run to claim a 19-14 lead before a kill by Shea earned a sideout. The Skyhawks had a late push with kills from Nunez and another Dembickie block and eventually trailed by one at 24-23. Despite the late pressure, Adams State ended things with a kill on the pin.

The teams traded points to begin the second set before a small surge by the Grizzlies gave them a 10-8 lead. Kills by senior Alexis Hobie and Shea kept the Skyhawks in the set, trailing by just one point midway through. Adams State found some separation by taking advantage of a slew of Fort Lewis miscues to go up 20-13. The Skyhawks chipped away with a 4-1 run, but the Grizzlies reached set points with a seven-point lead. Freshman Maddy Shumway dropped an ace to extend the set, but an attacking error ended the set in a 25-19 score.

Scoring runs were the feature of the third set with a five-point surge giving Adams State the lead. The Skyhawks responded with a trio of points and remained within two points early in the set. Junior Ivy Schoditsch contributed a kill, her first after a long stretch being sidelined due to injury, for a 15-12 score. The Grizzlies had the momentum late in the set and fought off the Skyhawks with the set's final two points to end it at 25-17.

Fort Lewis (9-13, 5-6 RMAC) will face UCCS (9-12, 4-6 RMAC) tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. from the Gallogly Events Center. The Skyhawks are coming off an emotional five-set win over the Mountain Lions at home last week.
