Volleyball racks up most blocks since 2013 in road loss

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team put away the most blocks since 2013 and the second-most in a four-set match in program history with 17 but ultimately fell to UCCS to end its Power Pod weekend.

With the loss, Fort Lewis is now 9-14 overall and remains at 5-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while UCCS improved to 10-12 on the year and is 4-6 in conference play.

For the Skyhawks, the highlight of the match came at the net where they outblocked the Mountain Lions 17-6. Despite the net defense, UCCS outhit Fort Lewis .122/.071. UCCS came away with 86 digs and seven aces compared to 73 digs and two aces for Fort Lewis.

Fifth-year Lauren Shea led the team with 12 kills and 10 digs, followed by sophomore Alina Nunez who had 10 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Emery Pomroy tied for the team lead with 15 digs, matching senior Natalia Lambos who also added 36 assists. Junior Ella Butler led the way with seven blocks, followed by redshirt freshman Averie Dembickie who had six.
Fort Lewis held the lead through the opening points with a back row attack from Nunez making it 5-4. Nunez put away another kill to make it 9-7 following a scramble play with a highlight coverage by junior Chloe Ruhl. The lead grew to four points after four attacking errors from the same UCCS player made it 14-10. The Mountain Lions chipped away by taking advantage of Fort Lewis errors and running the middle to claim a 17-16 lead. The Skyhawks tied the score after a block by Dembickie and Lambos, but the Mountain Lions earned the next two points to force a timeout. UCCS rode the momentum for a 4-0 run out of the break, making it 23-17. Nunez scored with a cross-court shot out of the break, followed by a kill from Hobie that caught fingers to make it 23-19, but UCCS scored the next two to claim the opener.

Shea and Dembickie had a block in set two to make it 5-2 in favor of the Skyhawks, but the Mountain Lions answered with a surge to tie the score at seven apiece. The home team extended the lead to 12-8 following a pair of attacking errors, but a commanding block by Lambos and Dembickie earned a sideout. The Skyhawks held within a pair of points in the late teens following a massive solo block by Hobie that made it 17-15. The separation remained at two points late in the set, but UCCS continued to run the middle and increased the lead to four. Shea sent a kill cross court, followed by an attacking error on the other side to force a UCCS timeout at 23-21. Fort Lewis went on to tie the set at 24-all following back-to-back blocks. The Skyhawks fought four set points before seeing one themselves with an overpass kill by Hobie making it 29-28. The Mountain Lions committed their 15th attacking error of the set out of a timeout, and the Skyhawks earned a 30-28 marathon set.

UCCS enjoyed a six-point run early in the third set that saw them ahead 8-4. Dembickie scored the next two points for Fort Lewis with swings off of one foot, but a serving run followed for UCCS to make it a 12-6 score. The Skyhawks were forced to call a timeout midway through the set, and the Mountain Lions followed it up with an ace for a 16-7 lead. Butler tallied four kills to follow, making it 18-12. The Skyhawks tallied three more points to bring on a timeout with the score at 19-15. UCCS claimed five of the next six points to see set point. The home team closed it out with a kill on the right side for a 25-19 win.

Fort Lewis continued to apply pressure at the net, tallying three blocks early in the fourth to see a 7-1 lead. UCCS pulled within two points on two occasions, but Fort Lewis was the first to 10 points with their 16th block of the match. Shea went to work during the next string of points, scoring on three kills to make it 13-8. UCCS continued to chip away, eventually overtaking the lead at 15-14. The teams were tied three times before the Mountain Lions forced a timeout with a 20-17 lead. UCCS scored the next two out of the break, followed by two points for Fort Lewis to make it 22-19. The teams were point for point after that, and the Mountain Lions ended the match with a solo block for a 25-21 score.

Fort Lewis (9-14, 5-6 RMAC) will play one match next week, a road contest against CSU Pueblo (13-8, 6-4 RMAC) on Saturday, November 9 at 6:00 p.m.

Fans may remember the five-set thriller versus the Pack last season in which the Skyhawks claimed a 19-17 fifth set. Overall, Fort Lewis trails the all-time series 22-26 with a 9-14 record on the road.
