Skyhawks drop season finale to No. 24 Orediggers

Fort Lewis turns the page on a new era of Skyhawks football

GOLDEN, Colo. – It was never about going undefeated, setting records, or striving for small wins. It was about creating a building block of success for the future, and the 2024 Fort Lewis football team did just that.

The Skyhawks fell 67-9 to the no. 24-ranked Orediggers to close out the season with a 3-8 overall record and 2-7 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action. This year, Fort Lewis ended two of college football's longest losing streaks including 40 straight regular-season and 32 consecutive conference losses. FLC also won back-to-back conference games for the first time since 2017. Colorado School of Mines caps the year with an 8-3 overall record and a 6-3 mark in league play.

Kalib Davis made the biggest defensive play for the Skyhawks in the second quarter when the sophomore free safety brought down his team-leading fourth interception of the season, making a 42-yard return to just outside of the Orediggers red zone. The pick set up a steady eight-play, 21-yard drive that resulted in a one-yard rushing touchdown for Orlando Guevara, his second of the season, and the first Fort Lewis touchdown against Mines since Oct. 13, 2018.

Fort Lewis scored just once more in the contest when Jordan Thomas blocked an extra-point attempt by Mines' Blake Doud, and Kameron Lewis made a recovery with an open lane down the sideline for an untouched two-point return. Thomas finished the day with two blocked kicks.

Colorado School of Mines outgained Fort Lewis 622 yards to 135 yards, dominating through the air for 372 yards and an average of 15.5 yards per completion. Joseph Capra led the Orediggers passing attack with 283 yards on a near-perfect 16-of-17 passing with three touchdowns. Jake Sype added 89 yards on 8-of-9 passing with his lone incompletion falling for an interception. Both quarterbacks were sacked twice, with two of FLC's four sacks coming from Trenton Sullivan who ended the day with seven tackles.

Max McLeod led all receivers with 110 yards on six receptions while Flynn Schiele led all receivers with two touchdowns on three receptions. Nick Stone hauled in the only other Orediggers receiving touchdown. On the ground, Max Barnes and Jake Lamfers each rushed for a pair of touchdowns with Barnes leading all backs with 72 yards on seven carries. Konnor Mickelsen and Landon Walker each rushed for a score.

Stone Walker was 16-for-25 (64 percent) through the air for 97 yards and two interceptions while taking six sacks. Jacob Morris added another ten yards on two completions in five attempts. Six different Orediggers recorded sacks led by Hayden Gregg with 2.5 for a loss of 11 yards. Gregg also led CSM with eight total tackles to finish behind Jacob Penney who racked up a game-high 14 tackles, including nine solo and five assisted, to end his redshirt sophomore campaign with 122 total tackles. Both Penney and MJ Dailey V forced fumbles, with one being picked up by Juma Kashanda.
