Guevara’s career day powers Skyhawks to first conference win

Fort Lewis defeats RMAC foe for the first time since 2019

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The second-longest streak looming over the Skyhawks football program officially ended Saturday night as Fort Lewis (2-7, 1-6 RMAC) marched into Adams State's (0-9, 0-7 RMAC) Rex Field and emerged with a 27-17 victory in the Clash for the Pass over the Grizzlies to snap a 38-game losing streak in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

True freshman and former Denver South High School track star Orlando Guevara made five returns for 153 yards, rushed for another 77 yards on 15 attempts, and caught two passes for 52 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown reception down the middle to stretch the lead to ten points with 8:29 left to play to seal the Skyhawks victory. Guevara set a new career-high in receiving yards, kick return yards, punt return yards, and all-purpose yards (282) while catching his first career receiving touchdown.

"It feels great; this was the setting of one of our biggest disappointments last year. It was a tight game, just like this one, and things didn't go our way. Everyone came together and said they wanted to win this one. It feels really good when you have a goal and you're able to work for it over an entire year and come through," head coach Johnny Cox shared post-game. "People are very excited, and they should be. College is football is a fun sport, especially when you win as a team."

Fort Lewis took an early lead on a 22-yard field goal from the foot of Hunter Villavicencio before Adams State's Brysen Gardner matched Villavicencio with a 22-yarder of his own. After a steady seven plays into Grizzly territory, Fort Lewis went to trickery as wide receiver Jacob Burr connected with Christopher Thomas Jr. on a 24-yard to set up a five-yard jet sweep to the right corner resulting in a Jamille Humphrey touchdown and a 10-3 lead.

Once more, Adams State responded in its following drive covering 60 yards with five plays across 1:36 seconds of clock time capped with a 16-yard receiving touchdown from Aaron Johnson to Alexander Grado to knot it up at 10 apiece heading into halftime.

Out of the locker room, and on the first drive of the second half, Fort Lewis marched steadily downfield with 11 plays to cover 70 yards before Stone Walker pulled the option and scampered six yards to a wide-open end zone. Two possessions later, the Skyhawks looked to Villavicencio once again as the senior and graduate of Haltom High School in Fort Worth, Texas, booted a 38-yard field goal after an 11-play drive to stretch the lead out to two scores.

ASU would find the end zone one final time, scoring on a 10-yard rush from Ahmare Merrida following an eight-play, 75-yard drive. The Grizzlies went on to turn it over on downs the following possession. In the final Adams State drive of the night, freshman Jonathan Stewart made a critical five-yard sack on second down, his third and final tackle of the contest, to force the Grizzlies into a passing situation on third down leading to a game-sealing interception by Kalib Davis, his second of the season.

Fort Lewis outgained Adams State 382 yards to 296 yards, powered by a commanding rushing performance of 236 yards. While the Skyhawks struggled to convert just three times on 15 third-down attempts (20.0 percent), FLC stepped up when it mattered and went 4-for-4 on fourth down. In addition, the Skyhawks dominated in time of possession 36 minutes to 24 minutes.
Stone Walker had a clean performance with 122 yards and one touchdown on 10-of-19 passing (52.6 percent) while rushing for another 56 yards and one touchdown and taking one sack. Grado went 20-for-34 (58.8 percent) through the air for the Grizzlies for 163 yards, a score, and an interception with two sacks.

Defensively, Davis led the roster with eight total tackles on the night, including six solo, paired with his interception which was one of two turnovers forced by FLC alongside a fumble from Dorrian Hilliard that was recovered by Jack Butler. The Skyhawks did not commit any turnovers. Walter Stauffer made 2.5 tackles for a combined loss of five yards to lift the Durango native into a three-way tie for the second-most tackles for loss in the RMAC.
