Skyhawks soar past Cowboys for second-straight victory

Winning ways continue on defensive dominance

DURANGO, Colo. – Stone Walker went off for 321 yards of the Skyhawks 499 yards of total offense throwing for 270 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another 51 yards and a score as Fort Lewis (3-7, 2-6 RMAC) defeated New Mexico Highlands (2-8, 2-6 RMAC) 44-22 in polar conditions to win back-to-back Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games for the first time since 2017.

While the Skyhawks rolled to nearly 500 yards of offense, averaging 8.5 yards per play, the defense was the story of the afternoon as Fort Lewis picked off New Mexico Highlands' Joey Cave, who finished his afternoon completing 18 passes in 26 attempts (69.2 percent) with three interceptions and a touchdown, thrice on the afternoon to tie for the second-most in a single conference game this season.

Kalib Davis hauled in one interception, while Kameron Lewis brought down another two with 10 total return yards. Davis and Lewis both have three interceptions on the season, tying for the fourth-most across the league. Fort Lewis also registered a season-high six sacks led by Trenton Sullivan, who had three of his own for 17 yards lost, among his four total tackles for 20 yards lost across his seven tackles for the contest. Jacob Penney finished with a game-high 12 tackles, including a sack of his own for a loss of six yards.

Fort Lewis strived in all three areas of the game, including special teams, where Orlando Guevara joined an elusive club of just seven players in NCAA Division II to make a 99+ yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Guevara ties his head coach, Johnny Cox, as well as eight former Skyhawks, for the most kickoff returns for a touchdown in program history.

On the flip side, Hunter Villavicenio was stellar on his senior day as the Fort Worth, Texas, native drilled a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter while making four punts for 139 yards, three of which landed inside-the-20, with his fourth going for 51 yards. In addition to going 5-for-5 in point-after-attempts, Villavicencio also made a 17-yard scamper for a first down on a fake punt.

Jamille Humphrey had a career day as the junior made one reception for a 48-yard touchdown while also picking up an 18-yard rushing touchdown on a jet sweep. Senior Trey Goughnour also picked up the first touchdown of his career on a 38-yard scamper in the fourth quarter. In the pocket, Walker took two sacks while going 16-for-21 (76.1 percent) through the air.
