Three score double-digit points in home win for women's basketball

DURANGO, Colo. – Behind double-digit points and the team's best shooting performance of the season, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team earned its second win of the year in a 67-57 final over Northern New Mexico.

With the win, the Skyhawks improved to 2-3 on the year while the Eagles fell to 2-3 overall.

Fort Lewis enjoyed a 46.4 percent (26-of-56) shooting night from the field and a 43.5 percent (10-of-23) performance from three—both season-highs. Northern New Mexico was 38.6 percent (17-of-44) from the field and 45 percent (9-of-20) from three while dropping in 14 of 14 free throws.

Senior Darla Hernandez led the team with 14 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double in as many games. Junior Kate Gallery followed with 11 points and freshman Claudia Palacio Gámez followed with 10 points for her second double-digit game of the year.

Sophomore Trista Hoobler got the Skyhawks started in the opening quarter with the team's first three-pointer, and the lead quickly grew to nine points after a layup from senior Livia Knapp made it 11-2. Gallery knocked down another three at the 4:08 mark to extend the lead, and the Eagles finally snapped the scoreless streak with two made free throws. Fort Lewis responded with nine-straight points, capped off by a tip-in from freshman Katie Lamb to end the quarter in a 23-4 score.

Knapp began the second quarter with another bucket from beyond the arc, and the Eagles countered with a pair of made shots to make it a 19-point difference. The visitors continued to chip away at the difference by making shots at the charity stripe, followed by a jumper from Hernandez for a 30-13 score with under five minutes on the clock. Palacio Gámez scored four of her 10 points late in the quarter to make it 37-19 heading into the break.

The Eagles started to chip away at the deficit early in the third quarter after Fort Lewis fouls fueled a 6-0 run to make it 37-25. Hernandez and Gallery answered with four points following a rebound and steal from senior Samantha Wattawa. Then, Northern New Mexico saw a 10-point surge to make it a two-possession game. Palacio Gámez started to rebuild the Skyhawks lead with a huge three off an assist by junior Deniece Ryan, and she went on to score another from deep to close out the quarter in a 47-35 score.

Threes continued to fall, this time for the Eagles to start the fourth quarter. The difference was as small as five points at the seven-minute mark, but Fort Lewis answered with a seven-point surge to extend the lead to 12 points. The Eagles went on the score on a pair of threes, followed by two from Gallery and Hoobler to make it 64-52 with 2:16 to go. Hernandez put the nail in the coffin with a three-point play, and the clock eventually ran out on a 67-57 Fort Lewis win.
