Women's basketball drops home contest to #10 UT Tyler

DURANGO, Colo. – Despite outscoring No. 10 UT Tyler (5-1) in two quarters and holding the rebounding advantage, the Fort Lewis College (2-4) women's basketball team suffered a 63-51 home loss on Friday afternoon.

Fort Lewis shot 34.5 percent (20-of-48) from the field and 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from three. UT Tyler shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field and 25.8 percent (8-of-31) from three. The Skyhawks totaled 40 rebounds, including 13 offensive boards, to go along with 13 assists and seven steals.

Senior Darla Hernandez recorded her third-straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and the Skyhawks were led by sophomore Trista Hoobler's career-high 18 points. Senior Livia Knapp added 10 points and led the team with three assists.

The Skyhawks were quick to tie things up in the first quarter after Hoobler and Hernandez combined for four points through 90 seconds. Threes fell for both teams after the early tie, and eight points for Knapp made it a 12-7 lead. Fort Lewis doubled the lead with a floating jumper by Hoobler, and UT Tyler ended the quarter with a corner three to make it 14-10 after a quarter.

The Patriots chipped away at the difference with a basket on their first possession of the second quarter and followed it up by holding the Skyhawks scoreless for three minutes. Junior Kate Gallery reclaimed the lead for Fort Lewis at the free throw line for a 15-14 score with seven minutes remaining. UT Tyler responded with six-straight points to build a 20-15 lead which was put on pause when Hernandez knocked down a jumper. The Patriots extended the lead to as many as nine points late in the quarter, and the teams entered the break in a 29-21 score.

Scoring came at a premium in the third quarter with the score sitting at 34-24 midway through. Gallery knocked down a corner three at the 4:18 mark to bring the game to a seven-point differential, and Hoobler mirrored her one minute later for a 34-30 score. UT Tyler answered with a jumper on the ensuing possession and converted a Fort Lewis turnover for another bucket later on to build the lead back to eight points. Defense ruled the next minute of play before Fort Lewis ended the quarter on a 5-0 run—capped off by a three from freshman Katie Lamb—to trail by three heading into the fourth quarter.

Threes fell for the Patriots in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to rebuild the lead, but the Skyhawks stayed in contention with jumpers by Hernandez and Lamb. A 7-0 run from UT Tyler had Fort Lewis down by 12 points through four minutes, and the home team answered again with five points from Deniece Ryan and Hoobler. It remained a single-digit difference down the stretch despite Fort Lewis turnovers, but free throws and a late layup sealed the deal on a 63-51 final.
