Volleyball falls in five sets to CSU Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – Skyhawks volleyball built a two-set lead over CSU Pueblo in Saturday night Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, but the Pack battled back to claim a tight, five-set match.

With the loss, Fort Lewis falls to 9-15 overall and 5-7 in conference play. CSU Pueblo improved to 15-9 on the year and 8-4 in the league.

Fort Lewis hit .127 for the match compared to a .265 efficiency for CSU Pueblo. The Skyhawks benefited from 11 service aces while the Pack had a 13-9 advantage in blocks. Individually, sophomore Alina Nunez led the team with 14 kills, followed by senior Alexis Hobie with 12. Freshman Emery Pomroy led the team with 15 digs while senior Natalia Lambos had 12 to go along with 38 assists. Freshman Maddy Shumway led all players with four aces.

The first set was tight early on before a 4-0 Fort Lewis run made it an 8-4 lead. The Pack earned a side out out of the middle, but the Skyhawks immediately responded with five straight points to see a 13-5 lead. Fort Lewis stayed in control later, too, after a service run from Hobie made it 20-11. Again, the Pack found side out from the middle, but the Fort Lewis middle duo of Ella Butler and Averie Dembickie countered to make it 23-12. CSU Pueblo found some fight late in the set, but an eventual kill by Nunez ended it in a 25-18 score.

The Skyhawks carried the momentum into the second set and claimed a 9-5 lead thanks to an ace from fifth-year Lauren Shea. CSU Pueblo pulled within two points, making it 13-11, but the Skyhawks responded with service pressure and were the first to 15. The Pack would come as close as four points late in the set, but it was the Alina Nunez show for the Skyhawks. The sophomore powered her team to a 25-19 win after five straight kills to close it out.

CSU Pueblo came out of the break with renewed energy and used it to go ahead 10-4 before a kill by Butler slowed the building momentum. The Pack stayed on course and scored the next five points to make it a nine-point difference and enjoyed another scoring run moments later to see a 19-8 lead. The Skyhawks scored five of the next six points thanks to a run by Shumway at the service line, but the Pack ended the set with kills on the pins for a 25-15 final.

The home team carried it over to the fourth set where they immediately found a 6-1 lead. The Skyhawks scored on a Shumway ace and CSU Pueblo miscues, but the home team built the lead back with a scoring run to make it 14-5. Nunez put away two kills for her team, followed by a block from her and Dembickie, to make it 16-9. The seven-point difference held true late in the set after an ace from Shea made it 20-13, but the home team wrapped up the fourth set on a 5-0 run to send the match to a fifth set.

A kill from Hobie gave Fort Lewis a 3-1 lead in the fifth set, but CSU Pueblo followed that up with a 3-0 run to claim a 4-3 lead. The teams would become tied at four, five, and six before the Pack earned some separation with a block on the pin. Fort Lewis earned its eighth point after a service error, but CSU Pueblo scored the next three to make it 13-8. Hobie had three kills down the stretch to keep Fort Lewis in contention, but the Pack put it away with a kill on the outside for a 15-11 final.
