Skyhawks score twice in final four minutes to top Falcons, 2-1

ODESSA, Texas – Sophomore Anna Tucker picked the perfect time for her first career goal, completing a two-goal comeback victory over UT Permian Basin in the game's final 15 seconds to give Fort Lewis its second win of the season.

Fort Lewis improved to 2-1-1 on the year while UTPB dropped to 1-0-2 overall.

"A comeback win like this is huge. The second part to that is they did it in a very tough environment," said head coach Damian Clarke. "UTPB pressed us really week, and we never found a rhythm to our game. Somehow a collective breath happened in the last five or six minutes, and we started connecting passes and found performance."

The goal scoring was started by sophomore Haley Stafford who netted her first of the season, followed by Tucker who sniped the game-winner. The Falcons outshot the Skyhawks 13-6 for the match, but the teams were even with four shots on goal apiece. UTPB was called for 10 fouls versus three for Fort Lewis.

The Falcons had their first shot on goal just over one minute into play when Cassandra Ramirez pressured Rosenbaum with a shot from just outside the box. Rosenbaum won the battle with a low center save to hold the score. UTPB added their second shot of the match in the 12th minute, missing high right. Rosenbaum would make her second save in the 20th minute, again off the foot of Ramirez, and made another save after shifting to her left.

Anna Tucker put the team's first shot on goal with six minutes remaining, and it was collected by the opposing keeper to preserve the scoreless affair. Danielle Gonzales had the final opportunity of the first half, taking a shot from four yards outside of the box in the direction of the bottom left pocket, only to be saved by the UTPB keeper. The teams headed into the break with the Falcons holding an 8-2 edge in shots, but the Skyhawks matched them with two shots on frame.

The scoreless outing lasted 10 minutes into the second half before UTPB's Ramirez managed to score low left to give her team a narrow 1-0 lead. The teams played even late into the second half with Fort Lewis waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. The Skyhawks found it in the 87th minute when a quick throw-in found sophomore Ashlyn Salas down the line. Salas played the ball across the face of the goal to Stafford who crushed the ball from three yards out to tie the game 1-1.

The teams appeared to be ending in a tie, but Fort Lewis' pursuit for its second win of the season was not over. With 15 seconds on the clock, sophomore Ann Spence sent a ball ahead to Tucker who wasted no time striking from 18 yards out. Her shot found space under the cross bar and out of the keeper's reach to see a late 2-1 lead. The Skyhawks controlled play in the final minute of play and sealed the win on UTPB's field.
