Two score career firsts, Tapia adds a pair in 4-2 win over West Texas A&M

CANYON, Texas – Fort Lewis College women's soccer scored a season-high four goals on the backs of three players en route to a 4-2 win over West Texas A&M to end its nonconference slate on Sunday afternoon.

The Skyhawks improved to 3-1-1 on the year while the Buffs dropped to 3-2 overall.

Fort Lewis out shot West Texas 17-12 for the match, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. The teams combined for nine fouls and seven corners. Fifth-year goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for the win. Fifth-year Elizabeth David, senior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein, and junior Renee Junna each played the full 90 minutes.

Junior Abigail Nkrumah got the scoring started with the first goal of her Fort Lewis career off an assist from senior Danielle Gonzales and junior Anna Tucker. Sophomore Jenna Salazar followed with a header goal off an assist from Gonzales. Sophomore Abila Tapia followed with goals in the 64th and 68th minutes, bringing her season total to three. Sophomore Ann Spence earned an assist on the match's third goal.

"This was a good way to finish up our nonconference schedule. We can't complain about four goals and players getting their first career goals," said head coach Damian Clarke. "Going forward, we need to grow into a more focused group as a whole. We are capable of closing out a game and will learn from this one."
The Skyhawks held possession through the game's first two minutes and notched their first shot, high, off the foot of Meraz-Fishbein. Salas earned the first shot on goal in the sixth minute on a feed through the middle by Meraz-Fishbein, but the keeper dove to her left to pick up her first save. West Texas had its first true look in the 14th minute when an attacker found space in a two-on-one situation. Renee Junna came flying in to block the shot and give her team the ball.

Meraz-Fishbein had another chance in the 21st minute after a pass back to the 25-yard zone from sophomore Jenna Salazar was one touched top left. The keeper read it well and picked up her third save of the half. Tucker, the hero of the Skyhawks' last match, came off the bench and put some pressure on from distance with a shot that drifted wide left in the 35th minute. Fort Lewis found its golden opportunity with 30 seconds remaining in the half when Nkrumah scored her first goal as a Skyhawk. The junior beat the defender on the near post and crossed a bouncing shot into the bottom left corner for a 1-0 lead. Gonzales and Tucker were credited with assists on the play.

Fort Lewis padded its lead in the second half when a slicing cross from Gonzales caught the wind and found the back of the net in the bottom pocket. The goal was Gonzales' second of the year, and sophomore Jenna Salazar earned her first assist of the season on the play. The third goal of the match began when Meraz-Fishbein's shot was blocked outside the box. The ball found Tapia's foot, and the sophomore reached the corner. She sent a shot across from the end line and beat the keeper high with her right foot to make it 3-0 in the 64th minute.

Tapia's number was called again, this time in the 68th minute when Spence sent her service back 10 yards to meet her 14 yards out. Tapia wasted no time shooting a low ball to the bottom left corner to give Fort Lewis its most goals in a single game this season. West Texas A&M broke the shutout in the 75th minute after a foul lined up a free kick 25 yards out. The free kick traveled to the top left corner and out of the reach of a leaping Rosenbaum for a 4-1 score. The Buffs found their second goal of the match with just 18 seconds remaining, but the late effort wasn't enough to overcome the cushion that the Skyhawks built.

Fort Lewis (3-1-1) makes its long-awaited home debut on Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. match against CSU Pueblo (1-3-2) to begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Pack's lone win came in 1-0 fashion over Rockhurst on September 7.
