Skyhawks split final day of invitational, look ahead to RMAC play

GUNNISON, Colo. – Fort Lewis College volleyball opened day two of the Mountaineers Volleyball Classic with a sweep of Academy of Art before falling to Western New Mexico in the finale.

Match One: Fort Lewis 3, Academy of Art 0
Fort Lewis hit .217 for the match and held ART U to a .017 efficiency. The Skyhawks benefited from an 8-2 block advantage to go along with 43 digs and five aces. Senior Alexis Hobie led the team with 12 kills, followed by sophomore Alina Nunez who put away nine. Junior Ivy Schoditsch had five kills on a .556 efficiency and led the team with four blocks. Fort Lewis ran a two-setter offense between redshirt freshman Madi Edwards (18 assists) and senior Natalia Lambos (15 assists). Freshman Emery Pomroy led all players with 16 digs.

The opening set was close through the first 10 points before points from Hobie and Nunez put the lead at 9-6. ART U earned a side out kill, but Fort Lewis responded with a  5-1 scoring run to extend the lead to 14-8. The Urban Knights rattled off three points on three Skyhawks errors to make it a two-point difference before a kill from Schoditsch snapped the streak. Fort Lewis went on to push the lead to four after a kill from JJ Curry, but five points from ART U flipped the script to see Fort Lewis down 23-22. It was blow for blow down the stretch as both sides saw set points come and go. Eventually, redshirt freshman Averie Dembickie tied it at 29-29, ART U committed an error, and Nunez closed a 31-29 set with an ace.

The Skyhawks rode the momentum into the second set where kills by Curry and Nunez saw an early 4-0 lead. The Urban Knights scattered points but runs continued to fuel Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks grew their lead to 11 points after a monstrous 8-0 scoring run was ended only by a service error. The run saw blocks from Ryli Kalahiki, Hobie, and Schoditsch. Another attacking error got Fort Lewis to 20 points, and the Skyhawks earned four more points thanks to errors on the Urban Knights. The fifth point late in the set came on a kill by Lambos to end things in a 25-11 final.

The teams traded scoring runs in the third, first with a 4-0 Fort Lewis run that was answered by a 5-0 ART U run to make it 7-6. The Skyhawks maintained the lead late into the set with four attacking errors lending to an 18-12 advantage. The Urban Knights responded with an eight-point scoring run that saw four kills, three attacking errors, and a service act to flip the lead and make it 20-18. Curry put away the side out kill, followed by a kill from Hobie, but ART U continued to lead 23-20. Hobie and Schoditsch combined for a pair of kills to pull within one at 23-23, and the Urban Knights countered with a kill to bring on set point. The Skyhawks rallied to tie the score at 24-all, and a solo block by Curry on an attempted setter dump had Fort Lewis ahead 25-24. ART U extended the set with a point to tie it, but the Skyhawks came back with a block and forced an error to take match, ending the third with a 27-25 final.

Match Two: Western New Mexico 3, Fort Lewis 1
The Mustangs hit at a .153 clip while holding the Skyhawks to a .103 efficiency. The teams were evenly matched on defense, combining for 134 digs and 13 blocks. Hobie and Nunez tied for the team lead with 16 kills apiece. Pomroy led the way with 17 digs, followed by Nunez who had 13. Lambos earned a double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs.

The teams were tied eight times before the Mustangs took a narrow lead at 10-9. Fort Lewis came back with kills by Hobie to force a timeout with a 12-10 lead. Hobie added another kill out of the timeout, and the Skyhawks added to their lead with a Nunez kill at 18-12. The teams traded points from there with Fort Lewis holding the lead, but a 3-0 Mustang run made it a two-point match. WNMU answered back and took advantage of Fort Lewis attacking errors to force a Fort Lewis timeout. The Skyhawks got a point out of the break thanks to a service error, but the Mustangs took advantage of two attacking errors to seal the set, 26-24.

The second set opened on a run for the Mustangs before a kill from Nunez made It 5-2 out of an early timeout. Fort Lewis came back on a 3-0 scoring run fueled by Curry's offense and defense to force a timeout at 8-6. Fort Lewis stayed in the match and took an eventual lead at 10-9. The teams tied at 10's, 11's, 12's, and 14's in part to misfires on the other side of the net. The Skyhawks earned a 5-0 scoring run that was capped off by a block from Dembickie and Schoditsch to see a 17-14 lead. The Mustangs surged back to tie the score at 19-all, and the match became tied four more times late in the match. Nunez tied the match at 24-24, and an eventual kill by Hobie earned Fort Lewis the 26-24 win.

It was evenly contested in the third set before the Mustangs found some separation with a 9-5 lead. The Skyhawks pulled within one behind kills from Curry and Nunez, but the Mustangs built the lead back to four points at 14-10. WNMU continued its roll by using its block to extend the lead to 18-10 heading into a Skyhawks timeout. The Mustangs carried the lead late into the set and cruised to a third-set win, 25-17.

Fort Lewis gained an edge in the fourth set when a kill and block by Schoditsch saw the score at 10-8. The Skyhawks maintained the lead after back-to-back kills by Dembickie moved the score to 13-10. The Mustangs stayed within one point on two occasions before an ace by junior Chloe Ruhl had the Skyhawks ahead 19-15. WNMU sprung on Fort Lewis late in the set with a 6-1 scoring run that featured five kills from three players to make it a 23-23 set. Dembickie put away a kill to give her team the lead, but three more points ended the set in a 26-24 score.

Up Next
Fort Lewis (2-6) moves into Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play following this week's tournament. The Skyhawks remain on the road, first with a match against Westminster University on Friday, September 20. The team closes out the trip in Grand Junction on Saturday with a 4:00 PM first serve against #15 Colorado Mesa University.
