Griffins sweep Skyhawks to begin conference play

SALT LAKE CITY – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team began Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at Westminster University where they fell in straight sets.

Fort Lewis dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play while Westminster improved to 5-3 on the year and 1-0 in the league.

The Skyhawks were limited to a .079 hitting percentage compared to a .117 mark for the Griffins. The teams combined for 44 hitting errors. Junior Ella Butler and fifth-year Lauren Shea each had seven kills. Senior Natalia Lambos had a double-double with 22 assists and a team-high 17 digs. Freshman Emery Pomroy followed with 15 digs.

Curry put down the first kill of the conference campaign, followed by a pair from Hobie to see an early Griffin lead, 6-3. The Skyhawks rallied with kills from the middle and a solo block by Lambos to tie the score at seven-all. The teams tied at eight before a surge by Westminster extended the gap to 14-9. Points were traded in the late teens with a serving run from freshman Maddy Shumway bringing the score to 17-15. The Griffins locked down their defense at the net with three blocks down the stretch to extend the lead to five points. Nunez and Schoditsch put away kills to bring Fort Lewis to 20 points before a service error and kill gave Westminster a 25-20 set win.

The score was tied four times early in the second set thanks to kills by Curry and Shea before Westminster found separation with a narrow two-point lead. The Griffins' lead moved to five points after three straight hitting errors prompted a timeout. Butler and Shea combined for a block to spark a Skyhawks comeback as the deficit narrowed to four points at 18-14. The Skyhawks surrendered a point out of a timeout, and the Griffins tacked on three more points to make it 22-15. Shea had the final kill for Fort Lewis in the late points, but Westminster closed it out with a quick kill to go up two sets.

Fort Lewis saw a 7-5 lead in the third set with the match's longest rally ended in a Westminster hitting error. The Griffins went ahead 13-10, but the Skyhawks earned kills from Nunez and Butler, followed by two opposing attacking errors to claim a 14-13 lead. Westminster tied the score out of a break, but Fort Lewis took advantage of several attacking errors to go ahead 19-17. The Griffins tied the score again before Shea used the block and sophomore Jordan DeJesus put down a block for a two-point lead. Westminster managed to tie the score again at 22's and 23's and closed out the match with a pair of blocks.

Fort Lewis (2-7, 0-1 RMAC) will face No. 17 Colorado Mesa University tomorrow in Grand Junction for a 4:00 p.m. first serve.
