Skyhawks sweep Eagles behind DeJesus’ career night

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team earned a clutch win over Chadron State College on Saturday night thanks to a career-high 16 kills from sophomore outside hitter Jordan DeJesus.

The win is the first in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play for the Skyhawks as they improved to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Eagles fell to 2-10 on the year and 0-4 in the league.

Fort Lewis hit .211 for the match, just shy of a season-best, while Chadron State had a .203 efficiency. The teams each recorded five blocks and 53 digs, and the Skyhawks had the advantage at the service line with eight aces.

DeJesus led all players with her 16 kills, followed by senior Alexis Hobie who had 12 kills while playing in the middle and on the pins. Sophomore Alina Nunez registered 10 kills on a season-high .421 efficiency. Senior Natalia Lambos picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 38 assists and 11 digs while freshman Emery Pomroy led the squad at 12 digs.

The Eagles saw an early lead wiped away in the opening set when a 4-0 scoring run had the Skyhawks ahead 6-4. The visitors responded with a run of their own to take a 13-7 advantage before a kill by Hobie slowed the momentum. Fort Lewis began to chip away at the hole with kills from DeJesus and Shea, followed by a block from Averie Dembickie making in 14-11. Chadron State maintained a lead late into the set and was the first team to 20 following a kill from the pin. DeJesus started to heat up, and Lambos continued to feed the hot hand as six kills from the sophomore eventually tied the score at 24-all. The teams traded turns fighting off set point before a DeJesus kill and key service ace by Lambos ended the set in a 31-29 score.

Fort Lewis was ahead early in the second set with three straight kills by DeJesus making it 7-3. The Eagles found an opening midway through and pulled within one at 13-12 after a pair of attacking errors. The Skyhawks found some cushion with another block by Dembickie and an ace from Lambos, and the teams went on the exchange two-point scoring bursts. Chadron State worked its way back and tied the set with a block of their own before Shea found a side out kill. The Eagles made it a one-point difference again at 22-21, but a late Fort Lewis run closed it out in a 25-21 score.

The third set was evenly matched until a quick scoring surge had Fort Lewis ahead 11-6. A service error provided a Chadron State side out, but Fort Lewis answered with kills from Hobie and Nunez to make it 15-7. The Eagles continued to press and earned a pair of three-point runs to make it 18-15 in favor of the home team. Fort Lewis looked to have the set handled after a Nunez kill made it 24-21, but Chadron State took advantage of three errors to tie it at 24-all. The Skyhawks benefited from an attacking error, and Nunez put the nail in the coffin with a kill off the block to seal the set, 26-24.

Fort Lewis (3-9, 1-3 RMAC) will head into its Regional Pod next week against Adams State and New Mexico Highlands. The Skyhawks face the Grizzlies on Friday, October 4 at 6:00 p.m. in Alamosa, followed by a 3:00 p.m. Saturday match in Las Vegas, N.M. against the Cowgirls. Neither match will count toward conference win or loss totals.
