Fort Lewis volleyball opens Regional Pod week with five set win over Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Skyhawks volleyball saw double-digit digs from five, double-digit kills from four, and a pair of double-doubles in its five-set win over Adams State University to open its Regional Pod weekend road trip.

Fort Lewis improved to 4-9 overall with the win and remains 1-3 in conference play while Adams State dropped to 4-11 on the year.

The Skyhawks were limited to hitting .174 on the night thanks to an incredible 17 blocks from the Grizzlies. Fort Lewis outplayed Adams State in other areas, including digs (70-55) and aces (6-5) en route to the win.

Fifth-year Lauren Shea led the team with 16 kills (.367) to go along with 14 digs. Sophomore Jordan DeJesus followed with 15 kills while senior Alexis Hobie and Ella Butler each earned 14 kills. Senior Natalia Lambos was one shy of tying a career-high with 57 assists and added 15 digs to her stat line. The freshman duo of Maddy Shumway and Emery Pomroy combined for 24 digs, and sophomore Alina Nunez came away with 10.

Shea contributed multiple kills early in the first set to see the score tied at four apiece. The Grizzlies erupted on a four-point run only to be stopped by an off-speed shot from Hobie. Adams State took advantage of a pair of Fort Lewis miscues to force a timeout with the score at 11-5. The Skyhawks scored a pair, including a rare dig-kill by Maddy Shumway to make it 13-8. Fort Lewis was forced into another timeout after trailing 18-10, and DeJesus earned a side out kill down the line on the right side following the break. A kill and back-to-back blocks built the lead back to 10 points for Adams State, and a late run ended the set in a 25-13 score.

Fort Lewis captured the lead to begin the second set thanks to four Adams State errors and a pair of kills off the block from Curry and Shea. Adams State clawed its way to within a point after a big kill on the right side, but Hobie used the block for a kill and a two-point advantage. Adams State switched the momentum with a 4-0 scoring run to bring on a Fort Lewis timeout trailing 14-13. The Skyhawks recovered the lead thanks to kills from Shea and DeJesus and carried that advantage into the 20-point territory. An ace by Shea gave Fort Lewis enough cushion at 21-18 to call on an Adams State timeout. Fort Lewis scored out of the timeout with a block and went on a take the set on DeJesus' sixth kill of the match.

Serving was the highlight of the third set with Shumway and Butler combining for four aces and calling on an early timeout for Adams State. The Grizzlies benefited from a handful of Skyhawks attacking errors to tie the score at eight before a run had the Skyhawks ahead 11-8. Fort Lewis was forced into a timeout with a one-point lead, 14-13, in an attempt to stall a run for the home team. The teams went on the tie it up at 18-18, but Fort Lewis pressed ahead with a scoring run to make it 22-18. Adams State committed an attacking error to make it set point, and Hobie smashed an overpass to close it out 25-19.

The Grizzlies enjoyed a lead early in the fourth set, but the Skyhawks worked their way back to tie the score after a kill from Hobie. The teams went on to play with ties three times, but Fort Lewis continued to earn side out kills to play with a one-point edge. Adams State used a run midway through the set to take an 18-15 lead, but the Skyhawks stayed close and pulled within one. Blocking continued to favor the home team, and Fort Lewis was forced into another timeout trailing 21-18. Later on, Butler scored on a slide, followed by an Adams State kill through the block to bring on set point. DeJesus swiped one off the block to extend the set, but the Grizzlies had a kill on the pin to send the match to a fifth set.

DeJesus gave Fort Lewis its first lead of the fifth set after tallying back-to-back kills for a 3-2 score. The lead grew to two points after a block by Butler and Hobie made it 6-4. The Grizzlies flipped the script with three straight points to make it 7-6 in favor of the home team. Butler added a kill, followed by another overpass kill by Hobie to give Fort Lewis an 8-7 lead as the teams switched sides. Fort Lewis was the first 10 after two more points brought on a timeout. The teams traded two-point runs, and Fort Lewis called a timeout leading 12-10. DeJesus scored out of the break with her 14th kill using the block to make it 13-10. The Skyhawks found set point after Curry ended a lengthy rally with a kill out of the middle, and DeJesus sealed the victory with a kill on the right side.
