Volleyball falls on final day in Texas

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Facing a pair of ranked and receiving votes opponents on day two in San Angelo, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team dropped its final matches of the weekend for a 1-3 invitational record.

Match 1: (RV) Angelo State 3, Fort Lewis 1
Fort Lewis was limited to a .146 efficiency while Angelo State swung at .214. The Skyhawks out-blocked the Belles 10-4, but the Belles had a significant advantage at the service line with 12 aces. Fifth years Lauren Shea and JJ Curry led the team with 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Senior Natalia Lambos dished out 29 assists to go along with nine digs while freshman Maddy Shumway led the team at 14 digs.

The Belles took an early lead, but Fort Lewis remained close thanks to production from Shea and Butler for a 7-5 score. The Skyhawks enjoyed a 3-0 scoring run that was highlighted by a block from Butler and Curry to remain within two points of the Belles. The home team rode the momentum of an overturned in/out call to jump ahead 13-8 and force a Fort Lewis timeout. Curry earned a side out kill out of the break with a crafty off-speed shot over the block, but the Belles used another run to make it 16-10. Fort Lewis pulled within five as the set drifted into the late points thanks to a dump from Lambos, but Angelo State made a push to go up 22-15. The Skyhawks earned a kill from Curry to the deep corner, but an attacking error made it set point in favor of the Belles. Fort Lewis rattled off three straight kills to extend the set, but Angelo State found an eventual kill to close it out 25-20.

The Belles had a quick run in set two to go ahead 7-1 with the lone Skyhawks point coming from a Butler slide. The margin increased to 9-1 before a four-point run for the Skyhawks made it 9-5. Errors plagued the team out of a mid-set timeout after three attacking miscues extended the lead to 18-9. Redshirt freshman Averie Dembickie checked in and immediately notched her first career block, followed by a block from Shea and Schoditsch to see a 20-12 score. The pressure at the net resulted in a pair of attacking errors to keep Fort Lewis in the set, and Nunez made it a six-point difference with her fourth kill of the match. Redshirt freshman Madi Edwards checked in and placed her first career ace in the 1-6 seam, but the Bells scored the next two points to take a two-set lead with a 25-18 final.

It was Fort Lewis that jumped out to a lead in the third after an opening kill by Schoditsch led to four more points and an Angelo State timeout. New libero to the match, freshman Maddy Shumway came out of the break with her second ace of the weekend, but Angelo State responded with a 4-0 run to make it a two-point set. The set continued to favor Fort Lewis as the lead extended back to five points following a block by Butler and Dembickie. Curry would score back-to-back points, first on a roll shot and next with a shut-down block, to force a timeout at 15-9. The Belles scored the initial point out of the timeout but kills from Shea and Nunez extended the lead to 18-10. Angelo State pushed to force a Fort Lewis timeout, but Shea tapped down an overpass kill for a 19-13 edge. The Belles used a run to make it a two-point set thanks to production on the pin and Skyhawks miscues to make it 21-19. The teams traded points late in the set, but Fort Lewis held on to a 23-21 lead after a Curry kill found space down the line. Angelo State followed with two kills for a 23-23 tie, but Curry earned a side out kill for set point. The Belles fought off a pair of set points and dropped in an ace to give themselves match point at 26-25. Shumway extended the set with an unlikely libero kill, and Fort Lewis ultimately secured the set with a block from Butler and Nunez to end things at 28-26.

The teams played close to begin the fourth with kills from both outsides making it a one-point difference. Fort Lewis responded with kills from Alexis Hobie and Curry, followed by a Butler ace to bring the score to 7-6. The Skyhawks saw their first lead of the set thanks to a block from Schoditsch and Shea, and the set remained close heading to the midway point. The teams pulled to a 15-15 tie out of a break, but the Belles put their foot on the gas to make it 18-16 for the home team. Angelo State continued to surge on a 6-1 scoring run to pull within three points of securing the match. Fort Lewis committed a pair of attacking errors out of a late timeout to give Angelo State match point, and a double block ended the match in a 25-17 score.

Match 2: #23 Central Oklahoma 3, Fort Lewis 0
Thanks to eight blocks, the Bronchos hit a blistering .446 and held the Skyhawks to an .081 efficiency. Central Oklahoma added 54 digs versus 40 for Fort Lewis. Nunez led the team with nine kills while Lambos added 21 assists. Shumway got the start at libero and picked up 18 digs.
Fort Lewis had an early lead erased thanks to a five-point scoring run to put the Broncos up 5-3. Schoditsch put away a kill out of the middle for a brief side out, but Central Oklahoma answered with another run to force an early timeout. The Bronchos tacked on three straight blocks out of the break to make it a 12-5 score, but an eventual service error gave Fort Lewis the ball. Nunez added a kill to give her team its sixth point as the deficit grew to nine. The nationally ranked Bronchos added to the separation with a string of kills to make it 21-8. Three Skyhawks added kills late, but the Bronchos ended the set on a quick to the right side for a 25-11 win.

Central Oklahoma keep the momentum rolling into the second set after an ace made it 6-2. Nunez followed with a pair of kills to hold the distance at four points. The Bronchos used pressure at the service line to go on another scoring run for a 14-6 lead. Butler gave the visitors a taste of their own medicine with back-to-back aces to make it 15-9. Fort Lewis burned a timeout several points later, and Curry scored the first point out of the break with a kill down the line for an 18-10 score. Curry and Nunez combined for two kills late to see a 22-12 score. Sophomore Ryle Kalahiki was credited with her first career kill at set point, but Central Oklahoma used a service error to seal the set, 25-13.

Points were traded early in the third, but the Bronchos secured seven straight kills to make it a 10-2 score. Nunez finally ended the 10-point scoring run with a kill for a 12-3 score. Nunez went on to drop in two aces as the score moved to 15-7 in favor of the Bronchos. Central Oklahoma answered back with a string of points to make it 18-9. Butler got to the Skyhawks to double figures with her first kill of the match and quickly added her second two points later for a 22-11 score. The Bronchos continued to roll ahead and eventually secured the match with their 49th kill.

Fort Lewis will be back on the road for their final pre-conference tournament next week in Gunnison, Colorado. The Mountaineer Volleyball Classic, hosted by Western Colorado University, will begin on Friday, September 13. The Skyhawks will face Texas A&M Kingsville, Washburn University, Academy of Art, and Western New Mexico throughout the two-day tournament.
