Volleyball drops opening matches of Mountaineer Volleyball Classic

GUNNISON, Colo. – Skyhawks volleyball faced two formidable opponents to begin the Mountaineer Volleyball Classic and ultimately dropped a pair of three-set matches to Texas A&M-Kingsville and (RV) Washburn University.

Match One: Texas A&M-Kingsville 3, Fort Lewis 0
Kingsville hit a blistering .391 for the match compared to a .174 mark for Fort Lewis. The Javelinas outpaced the Skyhawks on defense, too, with nine blocks and 36 digs. Sophomore Alina Nunez led the team with 10 kills, followed by fifth-year Lauren Shea and senior Alexis Hobie who each had eight. Freshman Maddy Shumway led the team with 11 digs, and senior Natalia Lambos compiled 29 assists.

The Javelinas maintained a narrow lead early in the first set after a kill from Curry made it a 6-5 score. Lambos did well to spread the offense and feed her middles as the set progressed, but service errors allowed for a 12-9 deficit. The Skyhawks pulled within one, but kills on both pins made it a 15-12 lead for Kingsville heading into a timeout. The Skyhawks chipped away and capped off a run with an ace by Nunez to see an 18-16 score. Fort Lewis earned the next point, but the Javelinas used another run to make it 21-18. Butler put down a quick three-ball for the side out, and the teams traded points to 22-20. Nunez scored on a kill down the stretch, but Kingsville closed it out with a heavy ball cross-court.

The Javelinas opened the second set with four straight blocks and an ace to jump ahead 6-0. The Skyhawks pushed the score to 7-3, but the Javelinas fired back with another block to make it a seven-point lead. Hobie and Butler combined for a string of points before back-to-back kills extended the score to 15-9 in favor of Kingsville. The late points saw points fall evenly on both sides, but the damage was done as Kingsville wrapped up a 25-14 second set on a Fort Lewis attacking error.

The Kingsville block continued to pester the Skyhawks' offense after a pair of big stuffs brought the score to 6-3. Fort Lewis fought back and made it a one-point set thanks to an ace off the hand of Lambos. The score would become tied at eights, nines, and 10's before a block by Shea and Ivy Schoditsch gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the match. Kingsville rallied with a trio of kills and a block to win the race to 15 and lead by three. Nunez tacked on a pair of kills to the deep corner, making it a one-point difference and an attacking error on the following play tied the set at 16-16. The Javelinas were the first 20 but were quickly caught thanks to Shea's cross-court kill. Kingsville reached match point first, but Fort Lewis met them there after an overpass kill from Curry. The teams played a long rally on the next match point, but Kingsville emerged victorious with a 26-24 final.

Match Two: (RV) Washburn 3, Fort Lewis 0
Washburn hit .304 on the night and limited Fort Lewis to hitting zero with 26 kills and 26 errors. The Ichabods totaled 11 blocks and 50 digs compared to three blocks and 30 digs for the Skyhawks. Freshman Emery Pomroy led the team with nine digs, followed by redshirt freshman Madi Edwards who had seven. Alexis Hobie put away eight kills and Shea dropped in six. Natalia Lambos and Edwards combined for 21 assists.

Fort Lewis enjoyed an early lead in the opener before a seven-point scoring run set them back 9-4. Schoditsch earned a side out kill out of the middle, followed by a kill from junior Ryli Kalahiki for an 11-6 score. The Skyhawks were forced into a timeout trailing 15-8, and the deficit grew out of the break with a 3-1 Ichabod run making it 18-9. Fort Lewis saw points from Nunez and Kalahiki down the stretch, but a Washburn kill wrapped the set in a 25-15 score.

The second set saw tied scores through the first eight points before back-to-back aces from Nunez gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the night. The teams traded points to follow with ties coming in abundance before a 4-0 Washburn run put them ahead 16-12. Kalahiki ripped a kill cross-court out of the break to give her team its 13th point of the set, but the Ichabods responded with a trio of points to make it 20-13. Hobie collected two kills to fuel a Skyhawks scoring run, but a serving error ended the threat to give Washburn a two-set lead.

Hobie took control of the early points in set three by tacking on three more kills for a 4-4 tie. The teams remained deadlocked through a 9-9 tie until Washburn forced a timeout following a four-point scoring run. Fort Lewis picked up a point after winning a lengthy rally, but Washburn continued to roll to make it 19-10. The Skyhawks struggled to keep their shots in the court, trying to find ways around an imposing block, and the errors led to match point for the Ichabods. Curry and Shea combined for a block on the outside to extend the match before a Washburn kill out of the middle ended the set in a 25-15 score.
