Mavericks erupt in second half to down No. 9 Skyhawks

Pinto nets fourth goal of freshman campaign

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Fort Lewis College was handed its second loss of the season and its first in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Community Hospital Unity Field at the hands of Colorado Mesa University, 4-1.

Playing in front of a home crowd, Colorado Mesa (5-4-2, 2-1-1 RMAC) controlled the pace from the start, firing off 15 total shots, placing seven on-frame, while limiting the high-output Fort Lewis (4-2-4, 0-1-2 RMAC) offense to just five total shots, roughly 12 shots below its season average. The Mavericks, despite trailing in total possession by a few minutes, also forced six corner kicks to the Skyhawks' two.

Colorado Mesa broke the stalemate 1:05 seconds into the second half when Matteo Bonelli sent service towards the crease, where a diving Daniel Paulsson threaded the needle just inside the left post. Just a minute later, the Mavericks struck once more, utilizing a breathtaking bicycle kick from the penalty line by Manuel Ponce Casas.

The Mavericks would add on their third goal of the match at the 61st minute, when Kensho Negi sent a bending service pass towards the far post from the right side, where a streaking and unmarked Ponce Casas found enough space to punch in his seventh goal of the season.

Fort Lewis finally broke through in the 74th minute. Darek Rittmueller put the ball into the penalty area with a throw-in from the far side, and after a pair of Mavericks failed to clear the area, an awaiting and wide-open Francisco Pinto took an immediate strike off the bounce just a yard in from the top of the box, glancing the crossbar down and into the back of the net. The goal was Pinto's fourth of the season to bring his point total to 11.

Later in the match, with the Skyhawks playing down a man, Cain Castellon took possession inside of Fort Lewis' penalty area, driving and spinning around defenders before creating just enough of a seam to thread the Mavs fourth goal of the match inside the right post.
