No. 18 Skyhawks deal No. 22 Mountain Lions first conference loss

Baptista Filipe seals match with first career goal

DURANGO, Colo. – The No. 18 nationally ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team rose to the challenge at home on Dirks Field Thursday night under the lights, showing poise, determination, and sheer will to top No. 22 University of Colorado Colorado Springs, 3-1, and hand the Mountain Lions their first loss in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action this year.

Fort Lewis (5-2-4, 1-1-2 RMAC) got back on track offensively, rifling off 20 shots throughout the contest while placing nine shots on frame. UCCS (6-4-3, 4-1-0 RMAC) managed 12 shots, placing three on goal, but maintained plenty of offensive pressure with 12 corner kicks, the most by an opponent since 2021, to the Skyhawks' two. Hugo Sjöberg had a season-high six saves for UCCS.

All of the action favored the Mountain Lions in the early going, with the top-ranked Mountain Lions firing eight shots while taking seven corner kicks, and even finishing with over 55 minutes of total possession. It wasn't until the 42nd minute that Fort Lewis broke through, 16 minutes sooner than in the non-conference match back on Sept. 25.

Battling off a UCCS throw-in in a dangerous area, Quinn Bosanko sent a clearing header forward to an awaiting Lorenz Guintini. Guintini outpaced his defender, driving clear across the pitch into the Mountain Lions' penalty area before cutting and firing a strong chipping shot for his ninth goal of the campaign. The assist marked Bosanko's second of the year and fourth of his career.

Later in the second half, it was Bosanko who extended the Skyhawks' lead two-nil. After several pushes into the UCCS defending third, the Mountain Lions attempted to clear, but Bosanko jumped the pass 35 yards out, dispossessing the defender in the open space before belting a dribbler with pace back across the box and inside of the left post. The goal is just the second of Bosanko's career and his first in 55 matches since 2021.

In a similar fashion to Fort Lewis' 2-1 victory over UCCS earlier this season, the Mountain Lions would once again avoid the shutout. The opposition was given a corner kick in the 72nd minute, and after service from Gael Hernandez, an awaiting Aidan Harris took a touch from the crease to present an open ball at the penalty line, where an awaiting Cole Wearner snaked it through a trio of Skyhawks for his first career goal.

Finally, in the 88th minute, the Skyhawks put the match on ice. A series of cautions waved momentum between the two squads, but Fort Lewis continued to press into the UCCS half. A series of touch-and-gos gave Francisco Pinto possession, and he sent an arcing pass to the top of the box where Raul Baptista Filipe slipped through the back line before chipping the goalkeeper at the penalty line for his first career goal.
