Junna nets late goal in shutout win over Westminster

DURANGO, Colo. – A penalty kick goal in the 80th minute by senior Renee Junna proved to be the game winner in a quality win for the Fort Lewis College (4-4-1, 1-2-0 RMAC) women's soccer team over Westminster University (3-1-4, 0-1-3 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon.

Junior Jenna Salazar drew a foul in the box on a one-on-one scoring opportunity, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity. Junna was called upon to take the shot and drained it high-left, beating the keeper who made a move to her right. The goal was just the third surrendered by the Griffins this season with the second of the year coming on Friday in a 1-1 draw to Western Colorado University.

Westminster held an 18-13 advantage in shots for the match, but Fort Lewis earned a 9-7 edge in shots on target. Freshman goalkeeper Trinity Lujan collected a career-high seven saves in a memorable shutout for the young keeper. Senior Abigail Nkrumah and Salazar each picked up two shots on goal. Junior Ann Spence, senior Josie Coulter, and Junna played fulltime.

Coulter put a shot on goal in the seventh minute to get the Skyhawks tarted offensively, followed by Nkrumah in the 10th minute to trigger another save. Lujan made her first save in the 25th minute, followed by two more for Fort Lewis three minutes later.

The Skyhawks continued to maintain possession and added two more shots on goal into the 40 minute mark. The Griffins ended the half with an offside call to send the teams into the break with a 0-0 deadlock.

Lujan was tested early and often in the second half, making quality saves to hold the score. Westminster had a prime look in the 47th minute with a shot that rattled off the woodwork, and Lujan saved the rebounded shot to give Fort Lewis a moment to breathe. The Skyhawks continued to stay poised under pressure and eventually earned their chance in the 80th minute to seal the win.

Fort Lewis (4-4-1, 1-2-0 RMAC) remains home for two more conference matches next week, starting on Friday with a 7:00 PM kick off against New Mexico Highlands (1-6, 0-3 RMAC). The Skyhawks wrap up the week with its Senior Day celebration on Sunday at 1:00 PM against Adams State (5-2-1, 1-1-0 RMAC).
