Salazar records hat trick, first player since 2013 in win over Cowgirls

DURANGO, Colo. – Guided by a hat trick from junior Jenna Salazar, the first player to complete the feat since 2013, the Fort Lewis College (5-4-1, 2-2-0 RMAC) women's soccer team earned a 9-0 win over New Mexico Highlands (1-7-0, 0-4-0 RMAC) on Friday afternoon.

The team's nine goals are tied for a program record with a nine-goal outing in 2007, and the margin of defeat stands as the second largest in program history, behind a 10-goal difference in 1994 against Northern Colorado.

Fort Lewis outshot New Mexico Highlands 31-4 in the match with an 18-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Skyhawks earned seven corner kicks and did not allow a set piece for the Cowgirls.

Salazar's three-goal performance led the team, followed by a two-goal outing from senior Anna Tucker—the first multi-goal match of her career. Junior Abila Tapia put up one goal and two assists, and senior Abigail Nkrumah added two assists in the effort. Senior Ann Spence, redshirt freshman Kiana Jamerson, and freshman Addyson Carpentier each picked up goals in the win. Carpentier's first-half score was the first of her Skyhawks career.

Fort Lewis pounced on an early chance when Nkrumah won the ball in the attacking half of the field. The senior sent it ahead to Salazar who artfully placed her shot low-right for a goal after just one minute of play. The Skyhawks continued to dominate possession with a flurry of near misses from seniors Anna Tucker and Josie Coulter throw three minutes.

Nkrumah and Salazar replicated the effort in the 14th minute with a pass from the midfield finding Salazar at the top of the box. Salazar was patient to find her shot and went low left for a 2-0 lead. It was Tucker's turn for a scoring chance just 55 seconds later after a thundering shot on goal broke through the defensive line and found the back of the net for a 3-0 difference.

The Skyhawks earned their fourth goal of the match after a trick play on a set piece was executed to perfection. Kiana Jamerson faked the corner, giving way for Coulter to send a pass to Gomez in the box. Gomez tapped the ball to Carpentier who converted a shot above the head of the keeper for her first goal as a Skyhawk. New Mexico Highlands conceded its fifth goal of the match two minutes later after a deflected shot from Jamerson snuck past the keeper. Lujan collected her first save of the match in the 42nd minute on a floating attempt from 20 yards out to preserve the score.

The second half opened with back and forth play as Fort Lewis worked a mix of newcomers and veterans onto the pitch. Tapia broke through in in the 60th minute with a well-placed shot high-right to make it a 6-0 match score. Salazar secured her hat trick in the 78th minute after an excellent pass from senior Franziska Semik led to a scoring chance and a 7-0 lead. Tucker followed with her second goal of the match in the 80th minute and later assisted on the team's ninth goal in the 86th minute, a shot from Spence that was a chip mid-stride to secure the 9-0 win.

Fort Lewis (5-4-1, 2-2-0 RMAC) is back on Dirks Field on Sunday at 1:00 PM against Adams State University (6-2-2, 2-1-1 RMAC). The Grizzlies are coming off a 1-1 tie against Western Colorado University on Thursday in Gunnison.
