Volleyball falls in five to Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Skyhawks volleyball forced a fifth set, but untimely errors resulted in a road loss to Colorado Christian University on Friday evening.

Fort Lewis dropped to 14-10 overall and 8-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play while Colorado Christian improved to 11-14, 6-7 RMAC.

The Skyhawks were limited to hitting just .118 compared to a .179 mark for the Cougars. Colorado Christian struggled at the service line with 14 errors and four aces compared to a 9/9 split for Fort Lewis.

Freshman Caroline Munson led the team with 15 kills while hitting .481, followed by junior Jordan DeJesus at 12 kills and 10 digs. Four players reached double-digit digs for the Skyhawks, led by freshman Alyx Daugherty at 21. Freshman Arianna Reyna followed with 26 assists and 16 digs.

The first set began with kills from three Skyhawks for a 4-1 lead, and an ace by Reyna eventually got Fort Lewis to 10 points. Nunez and Munson combined for kills to make it 13-8, followed by a scoring run to make it a two-point difference. Fort Lewis maintained the lead at the media timeout and added to it with a 4-1 scoring run. Attacking errors plagued Colorado Christian late in the set to give Fort Lewis the opener by a 25-17 final.

Ties were the name of the game early in set two with four knotted scores leading to a narrow 10-8 lead for Fort Lewis. The Cougars responded with a scoring run to take a 15-12 lead at the break. Cambria Freymuth notched a kill out of the timeout, but the next 10 points would go to the home team to take a dominant 25-15 set two.

Fort Lewis trailed in the third set put stayed within striking distance thanks to a kill from Ivy Schoditsch. Another late run gave Colorado Christian a 23-17 lead to force a Fort Lewis timeout. The Skyhawks earned the next four points out of the break with kills from Munson and DeJesus, making it 23-21. The Cougars reached set point and eventually stole the set despite late pressure from the Skyhawks.

Colorado Christian carried the lead in the fourth set after the teams traded service errors for an 8-6 score. Fort Lewis overtook the lead with Ellie Ames as the service line and held a 15-13 edge at the break. The Skyhawks held onto the lead thanks to a pair of attacking errors on the Cougars, bringing on another timeout with the score at 20-17. A block by Freymuth and Ames highlighted a late put that closed the set in a 25-18 score.

The Skyhawks faced a 5-2 deficit in the fifth set after a pair of errors provided an edge. Ames sparked a 3-0 scoring run with a kill, followed by a stint at the service line for a 7-6 score. Colorado Christian picked up a kill to make it 9-6, but Fort Lewis answered with more pressure from the service line for a 10-9 score. Nunez extended the run with her 10th kill of the match to bring on a Cougar timeout. The teams became tied at 11 and 12 but late errors ended the match in favor of Colorado Christian.
