Daugherty’s defense ties program record, Skyhawks fall in five to (RV) Mountain Lions

DURANGO, Colo. – Freshman Alyx Daugherty put on a show for the home crowd on Saturday, racking up 40 digs to match a program record in a narrow five-set loss to (RV) UCCS. Daugherty is just the 10th player in NCAA DII to reach 40 digs in a match this season.

With the loss, Fort Lewis dropped to 14-9 overall and 8-4 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play while UCCS improved to 22-2, 11-1 RMAC.
The Skyhawks hit .133 for the match compared to a .177 efficiency for the Mountain Lions. Fort Lewis put up 105 digs for a mark that ranks fifth in program history in a five set match.

Junior Alina Nunez was one kill shy of matching a career-high with 21 on the night at an efficient .340 mark. She was backed up by senior Ryli Kalahiki at nine kills (.258) and nine digs. Freshman Arianna Reyna put up a double-double with 27 assists and a career-high 17 digs.

The first set featured 14 ties a three lead changes, all leading up to a service error that made it 23-23. Freshman Caroline Munson gave the Skyhawks set point with a kill, and an attacking error gave the opener to the home team.

The following set was another back-and-forth battle with a 3-0 run making it 13-11 in favor of Fort Lewis. UCCS used a streak to reclaim the lead and reached set point with a kill from the pin. Two attacking errors for the Mountain Lions turned it into a 24-23 score, but a service error closed out the second.

The Mountain Lions grabbed an early lead thanks to five-straight points before freshman Cambria Freymuth stopped the run. Fort Lewis worked to take a lead with Kalahiki at the service line and held it into the media timeout. UCCS racked up points out of the break, carrying a three-point lead into the late portion of the set. An eventual block on the pin ended it in a 25-21 score.

The fourth set saw 10 ties and six lead changes with the teams battling for any advantage. Kalahiki gave Fort Lewis a narrow lead at 10-9, followed by a run that gave UCCS an edge. The Mountain Lions maintained the lead late into the set, but a run sparked by Nunez made it set point Fort Lewis. UCCS fought it off but a service error and setter kill from Addie Garn sent the match to a fifth.

UCCS held the lead in the fifth set with Fort Lewis coming within one-point numerous times. A 3-0 surge had UCCS up 10-6, but Fort Lewis scored the next two to keep it close. Despite holding within a pair, UCCS gained momentum at the end to seal a 15-11 win.
