Skyhawks surrender second-half surge in loss to Eagles

CHADRON, Neb. – Skyhawks women's basketball surrendered 50 second-half points to drop an 83-72 conference road game to Chadron State College.

Fort Lewis heads into its final game of the season with an overall record of 6-21 and a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference clip of 3-16. Chadron State improved to 6-19, 5-14 RMAC.

The Skyhawks shot 37.9 percent from the field and 25.9 percent from three. The Eagles shot 46.8 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from deep. Chadron State scored 18 total free throws—including 13 in the final quarter. The Skyhawks were outrebounded 45-32 in the contest.

Junior Deniece Ryan led the team with 21 points and five assists, followed by seniors Livia Knapp and Darla Hernandez with 18 points apiece. Hernandez was the leader with seven rebounds. Chadron State was led by Ashayla Powers who contributed 32 points and 12 rebounds.

Fort Lewis scored with back-to-back three pointers off the hands of Hernandez and Lamb and carried the lead to the midway point of the quarter. Guanella gave the Skyhawks 11 points with a drive to the rim, and the Eagles countered with a pair of buckets to tie the score with 4:56 to go. Chadron State took the lead on its next possession, and the Skyhawks managed to end the quarter on an 11-2 scoring run to hold a 23-16 lead at the buzzer.

The lead grew to nine points after 30 seconds of the second quarter when Hernandez knocked down a jumper. The teams traded points with a hot scoring streak at the five minute mark, and Fort Lewis remained ahead 35-28. The Eagles hit a shot from beyond the arc with three minutes on the clock to cut the difference to four points, but Ryan ended the half with back-to-back made threes for a 43-33 lead heading into the break.

The Eagles began chipping away at the difference thanks to solid defensive effort and made it a 48-43 score with 7:34 on the clock. The home team pulled within one possession moments later and managed to tie things at 49-49 midway through. They took their first lead of the second half and built up a lead thanks to a nine-point scoring surge. Livia Knapp finally got Fort Lewis on the board with 1:09 to go but the Skyhawks trailed by five points heading into the fourth quarter.

Knapp continued her tear into the fourth quarter with a made three-pointer, but Chadron State worked to extend the lead to nine points after five minutes. The Eagles' run continued into the later portion of the fourth quarter and the game ended with free throws for both sides for an 83-72 final.

Fort Lewis (6-21, 3-16 RMAC) ends its season on Saturday against South Dakota Mines (7-19, 7-12 RMAC).
