Women's basketball ends season with loss to Hardrockers

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team outscored South Dakota Mines in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was too much to overcome in a 71-59 final.

Fort Lewis ended its season with an overall record of 6-22 and a 3-17 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. South Dakota Mines improved to 8-19 overall and 8-12 in the league.

Senior Livia Knapp closed out her career with a 25-point performance, followed by junior Deniece Ryan with 11 points. Senior Darla Hernandez led the team with nine rebounds. South Dakota Mines had four players in double-figures, including Morning Grace Spotted Bear's 15-point, 14-rebound performance.

The teams were knotted up twice through the game's opening minutes, but South Dakota Mines used a pair of threes to take a 10-4 lead. Knapp got the Skyhawks to double-figures with back-to-back jumpers for a 16-10 deficit with 2:58 on the clock. Knapp scored two more points while the Hardrockers added seven to lead 23-12 at the buzzer.

Three-point shooting carried into the second quarter, with the Skyhawks trimming the difference to eight points. Fort Lewis continued to chip away, making it a seven-point game on two occasions midway through the quarter. South Dakota Mines enjoyed a 5-0 run late, and Fort Lewis was the last to score with a jumper by Knapp for a 36-26 game at the half.

The third quarter featured four three-pointers between the teams to bring the score to 47-26 with seven minutes on the clock. Scoring was hard to come by for the next three minutes before a drive from Katie Lamb gave the Skyhawks 33 points. Knapp's hot-streak extended to the 2:53 mark where she drained a shot from the perimeter to make it a 12 point game. The Hardrockers scored nine of the next 11 points before a buzzer beater three by Knapp sent the teams to the fourth quarter in a 57-41 score.

It took two minutes of play in the fourth quarter for either side to score, and the Skyhawks went on an 8-2 scoring run for a 61-49 score midway through. Fort Lewis continued to chip away and held the separation at 10 points into the final minute. Eva Kinston scored her third field goal of the fourth quarter to make it 65-58, forcing a South Dakota Mines timeout with 51 seconds to go. The Hardrockers scored both of their free throws out of the break and managed to score four more to end the game in a 71-59 score.
