Men’s golf makes strong start at The Stack Cougar-Burro Collegiate

Chesler, Skyhawks chase top-five finishes

BUCKEYE, Ariz. – Fort Lewis men's golf got off to a quality start at The Stack Cougar-Burro Collegiate on Sunday afternoon, with the Skyhawks currently sitting in fifth place among 14 teams thanks to an eight-over-par team score of 296 after the first 18 holes.
 
The Skyhawks, up against a talented field of in-region competition and the 7,258 yards of Verrado Golf Club, trail fourth-place Westminster with a score of 295 (+7), third-place No. 14 Cal State East Bay with a score of 294 (+6), and second place No. 27 Colorado Mesa with a 292 (4). The defending national champions and overall No. 1 Colorado Christian leads the tournament with a dominant, 11-under-par score of 277.
 
Colorado Christian boasts the top four individual scorers in the tournament and five of the top seven overall. Adam Duncan leads the field with a four-under-par 68, followed by Xavier Bighaus with a 69 (-3), and both Sungyeop Cho and Sangha Park each with a 70 (-2).
 
Senior Jake Chesler paced Fort Lewis through round one, with the Firestone, Colo., native recording a one-under 71 thanks to a trio of birdies and an eagle on hole 15. Senior Ronald Kildall III is the next man up on the individual leaderboard, residing in a tie for 18th with junior Ian Henderson, who is competing as an unattached individual and cannot contribute to FLC's team score on a pair of two-over 74s.
 
Junior Traejan Andrews, who supplied the Skyhawks only other eagle of the day on hole 10, found himself in a tie for 23rd after carding a 75 (+3). Seniors Tyler Tyson and Jordan Jennings sit in the back of the pack, tying for 33rd after both players went four-over-par with 76s.

The Skyhawks will play round two at Verrado Golf Club tomorrow, Monday, Mar. 24, before heading over to the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz., for the third and final round this Tuesday, Mar. 25.
