Skyhawks stay level at RJGA Shootout at Estrella

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Led by Sarah Grenemyer and Kathryn Moores, the Fort Lewis women's golf team earned a ninth-place finish as a team Tuesday afternoon under the heat of the desert at the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association Shootout at Estrella.
 
The Skyhawks, who shot a 309 (+21) in round one yesterday, remained steady, firing a 310 (+22) in the final round, adding a single stroke to yesterday's score. Fort Lewis' overall score of 619 (+43) was good for ninth, edging Western New Mexico (620, +44) and Jessup University (629, +53).
 
No. 9-ranked Cal State San Marcos came from behind, shooting a three-under-par 285 across the final 18 holes to win team medalist honors with a six-stroke lead and a 579 (+3) final score. As for individuals, it was Vanguard University's Theresa Shaw, the tournament leader in round one on a 69 (-3), who fired an even par (72) to capture individual medalist honors by one stroke on a 141 (-3) overall.
 
Grenemyer, a junior out of Albuquerque, N.M., shaved off a stroke in round two, shooting a two-over-par 74 to add to her first round 75 (+3) to earn a tie for 18th overall on a 149 (+5) total. Moores, the Skyhawks leader after round one thanks to a hole-in-one, finished five over par with a 77 to bring her overall total to 151 and secure a tie for 22nd.
 
Annika Gutierrez, who competed as an unattached individual, cut down two strokes from her first round 79 (+7), posting a 77 (+5) through the final eighteen holes to capture a tie for 41st on a 156 (+12). Dimery Plewe rounds out the latter half of Fort Lewis' five-player squad, taking a tie for 49th on a 160 (+16) while Isabel Bustillos and Peyton Gibby followed closely behind in a tie for 57th on a pair of 163s (+19).
 
Up Next
It will be a short two days of rest for Fort Lewis, as the Skyhawks head East on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20-21, for the Westminster Wasatch Invitational at Glenmoor Golf Club in South Jordan, Utah.
