Skyhawks women wrap up final regular season appearance

TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior Dimery Plewe and sophomore Peyton Gibby both recorded top 50 finishes en route to helping the Fort Lewis Skyhawks women's golf team to a 13th-place team finish on a 650 (+74) team score at the West Texas A&M Desert Invitational at the challenging Ventana Canyon Club and Lodge.
 
Plewe, the Skyhawks local from the Four Corners and Cortez, Colo., was the lone player to put up a lower score in her second round, turning in a six-over par 78 to climb three spots on the leaderboard and finish T-35 at 157 (+13) overall. Gibby accompanied Plewe inside the top 50, claiming T-49 after a second round 82 (+10) slid her to 162 (+18) overall.
 
Fort Lewis dropped six strokes overall as a team, scoring a 328 (+40) in the group's second trip around the 5,802-yard, par-72 course, adding to a first round 322 (+34) to capture 13th in the 14-team field with a team score of 650 (+74), just ahead of Metropolitan State University of Denver's 653 (+77). The Skyhawks tied for the 10th-most birdies (13) in the tournament while scoring averages of 3.33 on par threes, 4.67 on par fours, and 5.63 on par fives.
 
No. 30-ranked West Texas A&M University, which also received votes on the latest Mizuno Women's Golf Coaches Association Coaches Poll, won the tournament with a commanding 12-stroke lead as the Buffaloes reeled off back-to-back 295s (+7) to finish at 590 (+14) overall.
 
No. 48 Henderson State University's Lily Nelson came roaring up the leaderboard from sixth place after round one, shooting a tournament-best 68 (-4) today to claim solo medalist honors with a two-stroke lead on a 141 (-3) total. Only Nelson and West Texas' Sarah Reed (143 (-1) finished below par.
 
Isabel Bustillos managed just one birdie in her final 18 holes, carding an 83 (+11) to take sole possession of 56th at 164 (+20) overall. Ellie White finished a few strokes back in T-63 with a 167 (+23) total, and Sarah Grenemyer rounded out the team in 71st with a 175 (+31)
