Jamerson nets another, Skyhawks defeated by #2 Broncos

POMONA, Calif. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team (3-1-1) fell 3-1 to No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona (5-0-0), the defending national champions, on Thursday evening. Redshirt freshman Kiana Jamerson scored in the 74th minute to break up the shutout, marking her second goal of the season in just two appearances.

The Skyhawks were outshot 19-9, including an 8-5 margin in shots on goal. The Broncos also held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks, with one leading directly to the game-winning score. Both sides combined for 18 fouls and two yellow cards.

Freshman Lova Sjölund picked up her first career assist on the Jamerson goal, while freshman goalkeeper Trinity Lujan played the full 90 minutes and made five saves—the fourth time she's reached that mark this season. Seniors Josie Coulter and Renee Junna logged 89 minutes apiece, and fifth-year Danielle Gonzales added 85 minutes of effort.

Cal Poly Pomona opened the match on the attack, forcing a save from Lujan in the 7th minute before breaking through on a corner kick in the 14th to take a 1-0 lead. Fort Lewis nearly answered when senior Anna Tucker fired high in the 26th minute, while junior Jenna Salazar registered the team's first shot on goal in the 36th. Lujan's fourth save of the half kept the score 1-0 at the break, with the Broncos holding a 12-3 shot advantage.

The Skyhawks came out strong in the second half, generating four shots on goal in the opening minutes from junior Abila Tapia, Coulter, Salazar, and Tucker. Despite the surge, it was the Broncos who struck again, converting after a free kick outside the box and a rebound in the 51st minute. They extended the lead to 3-0 just ten minutes later on another set piece.

Jamerson put Fort Lewis on the board in the 74th minute when a long throw-in from Sjölund was mishandled by a defender, leaving her in position to finish low to the left. The Skyhawks nearly cut further into the deficit after a late free kick, but the shot missed high, sealing the 3-1 result.

Fort Lewis will look to bounce back on Saturday against (RV) Point Loma Nazarene (2-2-1), which is coming off a 2-0 win over MSU Denver earlier in the day.
