Women's soccer falls to (RV) Point Loma Nazarene to end nonconference play

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Fort Lewis College (3-2-1) women's soccer team closed out the nonconference portion of its season on Saturday, dropping a tightly-contested 1-0 match to (RV) Point Loma Nazarene (3-2-1).

Fort Lewis led the match in shots with 16 compared to 14 for Point Loma. The Skyhawks held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The teams combined for 24 fouls and two yellow cards.

Senior Abigail Nkrumah and junior Jenna Salazar each had five shots with two of Nkrumah's making their way on goal. The team saw 90 minutes of effort from six field players, including Dannon Yake, Amber Otts, Ann Spence, Danielle Gonzales, Renee Junna, and Josie Coulter. Freshman Trinity Lujan played 90 minutes in goal with three saves.

The Skyhawks were whistled for a pair of offside calls early in the match before Salazar and Nkrumah combined for three shots through 18 minutes of play. Ann Spence placed a shot on goal in the 31st minute which resulted in the opposing keeper's second save, followed by another two shots on goal from two more Fort Lewis players. Point Loma was called for a foul and offside to close out the half in a 0-0 score.

Lujan picked up a save in the 56th minute to preserve the score, and Fort Lewis had a prime opportunity in the 65th minute. The Skyhawks were fouled in the box, bringing on a penalty kick chance for Salazar. The Sea Lion's keeper read the shot well and made a crucial save to keep is a scoreless match. Point Loma capitalized in the 71st minute, using a deflected ball from Lujan in goal to net the game winner. Fort Lewis had one more shot on goal to end the match in a 1-0 final.

Fort Lewis (3-2-1) will turn its attention to RMAC play with two of its toughest challenges of the season. The Skyhawks visit No. 19 UCCS on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 5 p.m., before taking on No. 1 Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 1 p.m.
