Skyhawks volleyball sweeps Regis University to wrap up road trip

DENVER – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team capped off the road weekend with a straight-set win over Regis University on Saturday afternoon, improving to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Rangers dipped to 1-11, 1-3 RMAC with the loss.

The Skyhawks hit .182 for the match and -.038 in the final set but used strong service pressure (seven aces) and stout defense at the net (nine blocks) to secure the win. Fort Lewis held the edge in digs with 45 and put away 35 kills.

Freshman Cambria Freymuth led the team with 10 kills to go along with 10 digs, followed by senior Ryli Kalahiki, junior Jordan DeJesus, and freshman Caroline Munson with five each. Freshman Arianna Reyna and sophomore Addie Garn each chipped in 12 assists. Junior Ellie Ames registered a career-high six blocks. Freshman Alyx Daugherty came up with 11 digs, and sophomore Emery Pomroy added seven.

The score was tight in the early points of set one before a four-point run gave Fort Lewis a lead. The Skyhawks extended the lead to 13-7 with a pair of Freymuth shots down the line, and they were the first to 15-points after the Rangers battled to pull within a point. The Skyhawks allowed one more point from the Rangers but extended the lead to 20-16. Emery Pomroy provided pressure from the service line to make it 23-17 and force a Regis timeout, and a block out of the break got Fort Lewis to set point. Regis fended off the end of the set with a roll shot from the back row, but Fort Lewis closed the door on the ensuing rally thanks to an off-speed shot by Munson. 

The block for Fort Lewis showed up in set two with three stuffs giving the visitors a 7-3 lead. The Skyhawks made it 11-7 with their fourth ace of the match, this one coming from Daugherty, to force a timeout for the Rangers. The Skyhawks reached 15-points thanks to a tool shot from Freymuth and entered another timeout with a six-point advantage. Munson got her team to 20-points with a shot off the block, and the scoring run took the lead to 21-12 before an attacking error gave Regis a side out. The Rangers rattled off four points to pull within five, but another block ended a long rally and earned a Skyhawks side out. Freymuth placed a kill for set point and dropped in a tip for a 25-20 win.

Fort Lewis shot ahead with a 7-2 lead in set three after an onslaught of Regis attacking errors. The lead grew to 12-4 before a scoring run had the Rangers within four points. Regis continued to press and made it a two-point set, but another Rangers service error allowed for a side out and 15-12 score. The teams became tied at 15, 16, and 17, but a kill from Ryli Kalahika was followed by an Ella Butler ace for a 19-17 lead. Fort Lewis extended the lead to three with its seventh ace and closed out the match with a kill from Alina Nunez.

Fort Lewis remains on the road for a pair of Regional Pod games in Alamosa and Las Vegas, N.M. The matches do not count toward conference records. First, the Skyhawks face Adams State on Friday, October 3, followed by a Saturday match against New Mexico Highlands.
