Martin’s save keys in 2-1 victory for Skyhawks over Griffins

Fort Lewis concedes sixth penalty kick attempt for 2026

DURANGO, Colo. – In a physical bout that came down to the wire, it was a penalty kick save by Lucas Martin in the 77th minute that held off the opposition from equalizing, and the Fort Lewis men's soccer team bent but never broke in the final moments to secure a 2-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over Westminster University Friday night on Dirks Field.

Fort Lewis snagged its third straight win, rising to 6-2-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play behind a pair of first-half goals that stood the test of the final 69 minutes. Westminster fell to 2-5-4 overall and 0-2-1 in conference despite outshooting the Skyhawks 17-to-10 overall and firing off six corner kicks to FLC's three.

Junior midfielder William Bretvik got the Durango faithful on their feet in the 14th minute after finding the open space just outside of the penalty area and rifling a worm-burner off a volley on short service from Raul Baptista Filipe. Bretvik notched his fifth goal of the year and Baptista Filipe his fifth assist thus far.

The Skyhawks' attack continued, and the blue and gold broke through again moments later as a pair of give-and-go passes from Francisco Pinto and Baptista Filipe, and lastly, a no-look back-heel pass toward the middle of the box by Baptista Filipe, gave Pinto the space needed to bend a left-footed shot just around the diving goalkeeper inside the far post to secure the two-goal advantage. Pinto became the fifth Skyhawk this year to score at least three goals, and Baptista Filipe secured his first two-assist effort of his career and his sixth assist of the season.

Fort Lewis matched Westminster with six shots on goal apiece, but committed one extra foul, 13-to-12, and drew three cautions to WU's one. One such foul gave the Griffins a glimpse of life in the 71st minute when Parker Stebbing sent service into the box on a free kick just outside the box, and Broc Underhill lunged through the backline to knock in his first goal of 2026.

Martin finished one shy of his season-high with five saves while Fort Lewis and Westminster fired six shots on goal apiece. WU's Oliver Olsen matched his career-high with four saves.
